seems you can take the car to a thatcham approved installed who can check your installation and issue you with one for £25.

They should have it on file at the factory and they can fax you a copy of the installation certificate (I've done this in the past).

Lotus gave me one (for free) for my old Elise.

Might be worth a call?

My car's a Sep 02 model so has the Cobra alarm.

I was under the impression it had the upgraded Cobra 8186 which meets Thatcham category 1, and at renewal, my new insurers have just asked for confirmation of this.
However, upon contacting Lotus, they advise only the standard Cobra 8185 (Thatcham category 2) is recorded as having been factory fitted.

It's possible the alarm could have been upgraded after it left the factory.

With the alarm armed, if I wave my hand in the cockpit in front of where the sensor should be, nothing happens, which might indicate that the upgraded alarm has not been fitted (I believe this sensor is a requirment for category 1.)
However, I have alarm sensors on doors, boot, and front access panels, which I thought was a sign of the upgraded model; can anyone confirm?

scottydog. the only difference between the 8185 & 8186 (as far as I'm aware) is that the 8186 has the cockpit intrusion sensor & a self powered alarm.

EDITED: Just got the book out... and yes, the 8186 also has sensors for boot & access panels whereas the 8185 doesn't. Also, the 8185 uses the horn but the 8186 uses the siren.
I have no signature.

From the sound of mine, I'd say it's the horn, rather than a self-powered siren, and as mentioned there doesn't appear to be any intrusion sensor.

Strange that it has the sensors on the boot and access panels, if that's meant to be a feature of the upgraded 8186.

8185 and a half!
