Silk purse from a tatty pigs ear? UPDATE2: Light at the end?

Post by Rich H » Sat May 05, 2007 8:01 am

Morning all,
Update time!

Found the misfire! The last owner had fitted genuine porsche plug leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and so on, must have cost a fortune! However.... The plugs he fitted (Bosch) had screw on nipples on the tope, the plug leads form a 1980 924 fit the threaded bit...! The plug caps were just butted up to the plug tops and when everything moved about the tops were arcing in the boots!

Misfire gone! Now I have a smidgen of pinking under heavy load but otherwisse ok. Got a timing light on order from flea bay (£20 :thumbsup) to set the timing properly.

Also found another light on the dash! The front fog lamp switch switches it on when you have main beam on, pity it doesn't switch on the front fogs too... But at least it's wired into something!

Problems left:
Mixture adjustment - still miles out I suspect
Front fogs - no sign of life
Windscreen wash - intermittent
Lamp wash - missing a squirter and no sign of life
Rear wiper - motor goosed
top up gearbox oil
Investigate minor oil leak
Change oil
adjust tappets
fix rusty wing
Wire in the handbrake switch
Find more problems
etc
etc.

TTFN
Rich

It runs and handles quite well, had just under 100tuts indicated yesterday (Speedo does seem to work BTW!) with no drama. turning circle is amazing, especially compared to the liz!

It's getting there in very small steps :thumbsup

I HAVE FRONT FOG LIGHTS! YAY! :D

Stole a relay off one of the cadets scrap Mondeos as the wiring butcher had even had the case off the old relay  but they both work! (A bit squinty though!) I can now flash at people (Steady now!)

I also have a passenger door lock that I can open WITH THE SAME KEY AS THE DRIVERS DOOR! Trust me this is progress!

I even discovered the glove box light and boot light (Loose in one of the rear wings) worked (with a couple of new bulbs in)

Broke the pax electric window again though, but it's just the switch (again)

Things left:

oily bits - mixture/timing/tappets/etc, change fuel injector pipes
Rusty bits - OS wing/rear panel
Trim - drivers seat torn/boot carpet sides/boot roller blind/few repairs

OK, aside from the fact that £500 for a Porsche is a silly idea, I have a bit of a problem: Number 3 sparky plug is sooting up and is wet with oil...

Now this is either valve stem oil seal or piston rings right?

Is it more likely to be one or the other? What has been happening is that I take out the plug, clean it, refit, drive about, it then gets covered in oil, induces a misfire which then soots the plug up even more. Just come back from Sandwell Classic Car Show on 3 cylinders... clean up the plug and it runs sweetly.

Will a comp test tell me anything? Bear in mind the bores are already full of oil... No blue smoke though :scratch

Dunno. Ask on a VW forum maybe - same engine as some old VW, no?

Robin

A VW LT diesel van yes... Mostly porka top end and pistons. I'm going to check the tappets cold, then oil change for some nice thick oil and some seal restorer (AKA Snake juice before you all start!) supposed to give good results on these old pigs. Also going to put soem oil in the transaxle, as I doubt there is any left in it...

If that doesn't work it's engine strip down and rebuild, oh well I needed a project...

Depending on construction and inclination you could probably replace a single valve stem oil seal without removing the head. For all 8 or 16 it's not worth the effort though, unless head removal is massively expensive.

If you do a compression test and #3 is massively different from the other bores then piston rings (or just badly worn pistons/bores) is more likely.

Robin

Ta robin, I have filled up with 15W-40 the thickest recommended also laced it with millers stop leak addative. I'll see how that goes. I'll carry a plug spanner and a wire brush!

Found the crank breather hose off today so a smidgen of vacuum might help too. also did the tappets cold which might help a little
