Shopping centre approval sought

The investors claim public support for the development
Plans to double the size of Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries shopping centre have taken a step forward after developers applied for outline planning consent.

If approved, the joint venture between Henderson Global Investors and Land Securities could see the centre become one of the biggest in the UK.

Under the proposals the Buchanan Galleries car park would be demolished.

A new car park would be built above Buchanan Bus Station, which would also be redeveloped.

The shopping centre is currently home to more than 80 of the UK's major store companies including Gap John Lewis and Next.

It employs about 1,700 staff and the developers said that number could increase by 1,500 if the plans receive the go-ahead.

The new Buchanan Galleries will showcase the city centre of Glasgow and provide a much needed gateway to the city for shoppers and visitors alike

Despite recently featuring among the top three retail centres, Glasgow has seen its ranking slip after the development of shopping centres in Birmingham and Manchester.

Those behind the project said they hope to put Glasgow back into a position of prominence.

Business leaders have welcomed the plans, saying they would help attract more visitors to Glasgow.

Dr Lesley Sawers, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: "The city centre is a leisure and tourism experience, with major stores a short walk away from fantastic restaurants and trendy bars and clubs.

New restaurant

"Visitors, both domestic and overseas come to Glasgow for all of this, and an extended Buchanan Galleries will play a key role."

The application outlines proposals to extend the existing shopping centre by about 65,000 sq m.

As well as more shops, the extended space would also include a new restaurant.

The developers plan to construct a new pedestrian bridge, spanning Killermont Street which would connect the extension to the new car park.

The proposals are being considered by the city council

Henderson Global Investors and Land Securities said a public consultation showed backing for the project.

According to their figures, 78% of respondents supported or strongly supported the plans.

Myles White, of Henderson Global Investors, said: "The new Buchanan Galleries will showcase the city centre of Glasgow and provide a much needed gateway to the city for shoppers and visitors alike.

"The public consultation emphasises the importance of this project not only for the economic development of Glasgow, but highlights the impact a new centre could have on sustainable tourism in the city."

If approved by Glasgow City Council, work to redevelop the current site would begin in 2008.

The 'Shug Sheep Test'

Where there are sheep in a field, try shouting names at them. In our test, no names resulted in a response, until Thinforth shouted "Shug" at which point the sheep ran a mile
