Guys,

Is it true that the legislation changed a couple weeks ago and now a car needs to be insured even if it's declared off the road? (SORN)

As long as it's not kept on the public road it doesn't have to be insured.

Who told you it had changed?

It's not a legal requirement but you can buy "laid up" insurance that covers you for damage and theft and things but doesn't cover you for driving it.

I used to drop it down to TPFT cover.

Go for laid up insurance as it would be a bugger if it was to get torched or something else was to happen

don't forget who built your garage

It hasn't changed AFAIK, seemed to just be a lot of media hype about uninsured cars being the cause of all this country's problems!

It was the firm I have it insured with that told me so.
They told me that the legislation changed in the last couple of weeks, but searched online and didn't find anything.

The thing is that they were quoting about 700 quid for basic renewal (zero miles)!
So, not going for that.

And yes, I know, track day season and all that but with the garage build I just could not do what I wanted to the car over winter, and basically have to start now.
And I'm doing lots of little things that only I can do (Ok, I want to do).

And Paul, I know, precisely because I know the guy who built it would like to have some sort of insurance, but unless I find something reasonable...

As far as i am aware the law is if the car is NOT sorned then it needs to be insured

So if your car is on a sorn then no problems
