Number Plates

Post by ExigeKen » Sun Mar 11, 2007 9:24 pm

Doh just lost my second front number plate less than 10 days after getting the last one. It is costing me more in number plates than fuel at the moment.

Is there any way around this as this is the fourth one I have lost :?:

The first three were bolted on. The last set had 6mm sticky pads from Halfords andhas coem clean off. The other cracked or snapped and dragged on the floor.

Double sided carpet tape. It's a bit flexible so goes with the flow of the tension on plate when curved against front bodywork mount. And a couple of fresh screws with placcy fittings, rawlnuts or rawplugs just for extra safety!

I have lost my front plate a couple of times owing to low kerbs, garage entries, etc. So I have now gone for a smaller 3 x 12" plate but have yet to fit it, as I will need to fettle a new plate mount (S1s have these separate, I think S2s and Exiges have a plinth integrated to front clam)

Thanks guys.

I keep one of the damaged ones under water in my boot just in case - oops officer it has just happened.

Yes the S2 Exige has a plinth on the front splitter. I will try some of the suggestions. :thumbsup

Cant remember what the plinth of the exige looks like but i use double sided velcro and a 3/4 sized plate from fancyplates.com and although i still crack the odd one they do at least stay on the car

I use Heavy Duty double-sided velcro from B&Q after loosing a couple and haven't had any problems with it. It's got a superb hold.

Heavy Duty velcro is what I use, have some in the boot, could have given it to you at Knockhill.

Dezzy was saying the police don't like it if you use velcro to stick your plate on, can anyone confirm this?

Apparently it can be an MOT fail. But I can't see it myself.

Mine passed it's MOT with a 3/4 plate velcro'd on. And that was at Arnold Clark and not a "no questions asked" garage.

Can't see how plod would know / care until they tried to pull the f*ckers off - you can't tell on mine 8)

Get a small plate, mine is only the size of the plinth now and so is out of harms way. Strong double sided tape holds it on fine.

According to the DVLA http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/numberplateinfo.aspx ...

Are stick-on number plates legal?
No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

I have a number plate that meets the British Standard and have chosen to afix it with velcro. I don't know if there's anything specifically targetting the use of velcro.

There is also a section about combating number plate theft, which is probably why they would be against it... http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Ve ... G_10035622. Mind you, any criminal worth their salt wouln't need to take one off another car.

The second time I lost my number plate was when it was caught on an awkward shaped dip. The result was a crack on the front clam (not too bad). If I'd had the velcro plate at the time, it would have just popped off - I hope!.
