I.T. Hardware Help!

My sisters laptop screen has packed in - It's still possible to make out the desktop, but everythings apparently very dark...
Her other half took the P.C. apart (he's a mechanic, so enjoys ripping things to bits
), and reckons the LCD inverter is blackened / looks burnt out...
My sis has googled the part number, and come up with a supplier for a 'TOKO 49-9-0024-000'...It's £45 though, and she's asked me if I reckon replacing this will repair the laptop...?
I'm stuck at work at the mo', and unable to look at the machine...
Does anyone have any experience of burning out an LCD inverter? Would changing this fix the display problems?
It's an old laptop, but they've just bought a new car and earmarked the leftover cash for a set of alloys...Buying a new P.C. would mean no alloys!
Cheers,
Ross.
