I wouldn't get a solicitor to sort your mortgage. My recommendation would be Willy Crockett of Edinburgh Risk Management on Northumberland Street for a mortgage, they were amazing no hassle people

Kenneth F Brown in Dundas Street has been my solicitor for over 10 years, nice guy, straight laced but pragmatic and good response/turnaround.
My IFA is Stan Chukla (pronounced Hookla) of
Alan Steel Asset Management in Linlithgow, been looking after me for about the same time, and my Dad for years before that. Did all the investment mortgage advice for us but not a complete mortgage broker so may refer you to A N Other. Excellent for general investment stuff though. Alan Steel has won various awards over the years and is a regular commentator on financial matters in the quality press.
You can get great mortgage info from the net at
http://www.thisismoney.com/ and also from Charcol.
We are with
Yorkshire Building Society and they are BRILLIANT, although each to their own. One of the few remaining mutuals and it shows - positively. Just won yet another award, in fact.

Ah, sorry.
Mutual Society. ie, still truly owned by its members, rather than shareholders. Lots of hoo-hah about this in last 10 years as many UK Building Societies "de-mutualised" with nice windfalls for existing members (ie, savers or mortgage customers) but then exposes the former societies to standard vagaries of the stock market, acquisition by larger groups, etc.
Standard Life is the latest, and one of the largest, to finally give in to the draw of big initial windfall benefits for directors and members...but the long run (IMHO) means poorer service for the customer.
All down to the individual, of course. But I have been very, very impressed with YBS products, customer service and flexibility. Can tell you more if you are really bothered

The solicitor I ended up using were ok but wouldn't glowing recommend them - I would however glowing recommend my financial advisor who was excellent, very on the ball and have about 4 or 5 friends who have used him and all had good experiences:
Ross Cluley
St. James's Place Partnership
18-22 Melville Street

Hi Michael,
I will send you a pm. More than willing to help out, even if just to provide a second view on the right way forward.
Cheers

Remember and haggle both the solicitor and mortgage provider. It is a competitive market and they really want your business. If you don't ask, you don't get.
You'll probably get a good deal from a mortgage broker but I would think in this day and age if you have a wee bit of time that the t'internet is a great source of info.
http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/ is a publication that most lenders subscribe to so I am sure is a pretty good place to start.

Can recommend Donald (BigD) on here as he is an IFA and sorted out my mortgage - top bloke!
Can recommend one of my mothers conveyancing team (Perth based though) but she has given me the name of one of her friends in EDI who they use, who have been very good Beveridge & Kellas - tell them David Hay sent you!
I am sure they owe me some referral comission!
Good bunch and it is important to have a good bunch when buying property, not to mention i would go to an IFA any day over approaching a bank direct.
Dave

Jus my 2p of course!

Thanks for the mention Dave, I don't always read all the sections and don't like pushing my card in peoples faces so to speak.
