Mair noise

Not sure if this should actually be in the geek speak bit or not, but I'm sure the mods will keep me right...
Simply, my elise is standard. I want more noise from it, but can't be @rsed with getting a new exhaust. Naturally my thoughts turned to an air filter/induction kit. How much better does it sound with an induction kit alone, i.e. without back box and do I get noticably more power?
Q2 - can I do it myself, or is it a right pain in the @rse?

Piece of proverbial to do - there's one fiddly bolt, but that's it.
Options:
K&N 57i (any K&N dealer, Eliseparts, et al) - good noise, but sucks in hot air from the engine bay - hence possible power loss. Can be made more useful with ducting and a plantpot...
Hurricaine (Eliseparts or Elise-shop) - gets good noise reports from all concerned and is ducted to cold outside air. The popular choice.
ITG (Hangar111) - Mucho expensive but a glorious lookin' bit of carbon fibre in the engine bay - recommended for use with PTP's kits. Sounds fruity too.
The suppliers are all off the top of my head, sure they are more widely available and hopefully others with more time will add to the supplier list!
Remember after fitting to re-set the throttle position sensor (ignition on - engine not running - press and release throttle fully 5 times - ignition off)
But you'll want to add a zorst sooner or later, trust me

Id go for new exhaust. Check ebay and classified sections, I got an exige stainless number for 80quid and it sounds gr r r r rrreat.
As for filter, I dont know, hell I didnt even notice mine was hanging off when I got the car.

Just modify the std airbox intake. These induction kits make basicly no difference to power anyway on a std engine. If you modify the air intake pipe to take a more direct route and cut a bit off the end it effectivly gets fed cold air rammed straight into the airbox without no bends to slow it down. I done mine and it sounds loads better too. Not as loud as an induction kit, just a nice deep muffled induction roar under full throttle...... And the cost......... about 20mins of your time.
