The road to newcastle?

Post by r055 » Sat Dec 23, 2006 11:49 pm

heading down to Judes next week for a C service...

anyone know any good routes down there? or is it the usual mind numbing m74/ A69? (im fecking sick of the m74  )

dont really know the east coast route (A1) - how long does it take?

Head towards Edinburgh. Run round the Bypass to the Lothianburn junction, then follow signs for Peebles.

At Peebles, go left towards Innerleithen, and shortly after follow signs for Selkirk and then Hawick.

The road number to follow through Hawick is A698, probably signed Jedburgh, and once out the eastern side of Hawick look for the A6088 turn on your right. This is a lovely road, emerges right at the border at Carter Bar. Avoids all the cameras on the largely boring Scottish part of A68.

Then a wee bit of A68 on the enjoyable, English, non-camera side, and keep on for A697 (I think it is) when the A68 turns right for Corbridge.

Much better way to Newcy than any of the ones with signs on!

Ross, I'm doing the trip every weekend there and back on Friday and Saturday. The quickest route is m74 /A69 and with the roads being so greasy at the moment it's probably a lot safer than going on roads yuo're not sure of.

Doesn't stop you taking the odd detour on the way back I suppose.

I might be around if you want to kill an hour or two in Newcastle.

I second what campbell has just said. On the way back, its well worth doing the triangle off the A6088 (the B6357 to newcastelton and the B6399 back to hawick) which is a great 40 ish mile detour if you have time

A698 is fantastic once you are in England and free of the ridiculous amounts of car tax cameras.

I'm pretty sure we did some of the roads Campbell's mentioned on the borders run arranged by AndyG. They were awesome! 8) Ditch the motorway and go have some fun on those roads! :thumbsup

Know that road well... Louise was in Newcastle for 12 months, working with Procter & Gamble... up & down that road every other weekend

Could manage Newcastle centre to Glasgow (maryhill) in under 2 hours, without getting caught

I was up and down last night, up and down tonight and up and down tomorrow!

Wish it was summer. The Elise doesn't handle well in hurricanes. :(
