Post by rossybee » Mon Dec 18, 2006 3:05 pm

Have just posted this on blatchat, would appreciate any views from some of you more technology-wise dudes on here

Shug - I know you raved about the Archos 504 but truthfully, is it a good choice for kids birthdays / Xmas / holidays / general family use, over and above slapping it on ma lid & whacking about the roads in Tayside? :?

Hi there,

I have a TRV 22E

Image

It has fire wire, DV out ( only) but it is an exceptional performer. Cost me £450 a few years ago but has given me confidence to buy Sony again

No need for bullet cams - I mounted this on the outside of the door round KH using a B-Hague mount with no issues. I ran an external mic into the cabin.

Hope this helps - ideally you want DV in so that you can edit stuff on your PC and then send it back to the camera

Cheers

Surely DV out ?

I have used the older model you have there and am also looking to pick up a new cam with DV out and analog in for bullet / helemet cam.

Planning to group cycling trip again this year and being the techy in the group the boys are after some shots from helmet as I generally bring up the rear of the peleton.

Ideally DV in AND out ........

Therefore allows you to firewire the signal to your PC and be able to send it back to the camera after editing. The TRv 22 E does not have DV in

I cut most movies to DVD regardless so it doesn't make much difference for me..

HI Ross

I've used an Archos Av500 for quite a while and its been genial for the track as the camera attatchment is bullet cam style.

You can simply drag anddrop the films on and off the player making it easy to upload them online.

Shug's got a demo onein the shopin glasgow ifyour heading through that way any time soon??

Does a bullet cam not require DV in?

Bullet Cameras normally have analog video output (phono or BNC connections). You can only record footage from a Bullet Camera with analog Video out onto a Camcorder, Video Recorder, DVD Recorder or Archos if these recording devices have analog Video in. Most DV Camcorders have DV Out as this is used for outputting video to PC editing software via a Firewire cable and card or to a DVD recorders. DV In is not just as common but means that the Camcorder can accept video footage from another Digital Video device's DV output via a DV firewire cable.

My Camcorder had DV Out, DV In, Analog Video Out and Analog Video In. This means that for example I can send footage to another DV camcorder (via DV Out) or to a TV (via Analog Out) and record footage from another DV Camcorder (via DV In) or from a Bullet Camera (via Analog Video In)

The great advantage of the 404 (or 504/604) with the bullet cam is that you don't have to re-encode the video for web use or to drop it onto the PC. Even with the firewire option on a DV camcorder, you will still have to drop your footage into the PC in real time for editing. The Archos players simply connect with USB2.0 and you drag the file across.

As a dedicated camcorder, there are better than the *04 range, that's not it's main purpose: they are media players, and really, the best on the market. The bullet cam is a really high quality add-on though, and really extends the use of the player.

From the POV of a family gadget - well, firstly, you can throw away the wee DVD player for the car. A 30GB player will store 85 full length movies. You can also (with a wee FM transmitter) use it as a jukebox for the car (~15000 songs). You can even (with the travel dock) use it as a portable storage device for holiday snaps (300000 photos, you can download your stills cam into it) I've not even gone into the DVR station you can buy, to let you record from any video source (digibox, DVD player, anything with a composite output or a scart)

There's a lot of stuff you can do with the Archos kit - best thing is that they now have a user interface that lets you do everything you want, without giving you brain-ache. Great products :thumbsup

I have the bullet cam from this site http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/?kw=helmet ... QgodnHkoUQ

I also bought a Cannon DV camera with, as Cal said, DV in. The cam itself has been excellent and has been on the wing of my car doing about 160 ish on the Autobhan in Germany and didn't fall off. I bought it so that I could put it on my helmet on the bike too. I will probably end up buying a suction mount at some point as the bullet is not so good when it rains.

From memory the whole lot only cost about £450. :D

The good thging about having the Camcorder as well means that you can use it on it's own when you want to. :D

Here's the footage from the Isle of Man TT circuit with it. http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 9&hl=en-GB
