Sky+ Installation? (NLC)

Post by Stewart » Sun Dec 17, 2006 12:18 am

I presently have Sky with premium package of Sports. I only have this so that I can watch A1GP in the winter and IRL during summer.

Just had an offer through from Sky for half price Sky+ box (£49) with £60 installation. I don't watch too much TV but I think it would be cool to have something to watch when I do. Can anyone help me out with some questions?

1. My current dish is discretely attached to the side of the garage and the cable runs under the path into the house. Do I need to run another cable for Sky+ i.e. 2 LNB's and 2 cables? I do not want Sky Multiroom rip-off.

2. Any idea if I cancel Sky completely, will it still work with freeview on the Sky box i.e. will I be able to record council TV with the box?

3. I have checked the small print and am not sure if by taking Sky+ I will now be locked into a new 12 or 18 month contract - don't fancy that much as I can currently cancel whenever I want.

Really most interested in No. 1 as I will not be digging up my path again and don't want a dish on the front of my house.

Cheers
Stewart

1. Pretty sure you need a second cable/LNB
2. I know that on the std package you can ask Sky for a freeview only card when u tell em that you are cancelling all the other channels
3. Dunno, but usually when you get an offer of cheaper install u are locked into a min contract so they can recoupe the discount on the ongoing business.

Hope thats of help, others can correct me if Im wrong. :)

1. you need 2 cables for the sky+ box. (cant you use the existing cable to pull 2 new ones through??)

2. No, i dont believe the recording section will work as when sky+ was first launched you had to pay a subscription to get the new features. I believe these features are now included in the packages for free, but not on freeview (might be wrong though)

3. 12 month contract again on new box.

Thanks guys. The 2 cables more or less puts paid to it I think. I may be able to pull two cable through using the existing one but it would be tricky as it is cemented in at the entry point.
Also, really not too keen on a new 12 month contract. £37 at the mo is a bit of a luxury for the small amount of TV I watch, in particular, I make very little use of Sky Sports.

Thanks again

When you get a new Sky+ box they use 2 cables joined together and drill 1 hole for them. When you upgrade, they drill another hole and feed a separate cable through for the 2nd tuner.

You only get the recording features if you pay £10 a month subscription but this is waived if you have all movies or all sports channels.

Presumably it doesn't allow you to record though?

thats what i was trying to say about the recording. You can still use the box, but not the recording feature.

I have 2 seperate cables on mine, so be wary, they arent all the same and depends on the installer.

as a word of warning, phoning Sky customer services will be next to useless. they either wont know the correct answer or will lie to you.

Yes to two cables, ask for a Sky engineer NOT as suby and you will get it done well.
£15 for the option to use your sky+ box
12 month contract.

Sky+ is worth it IMHO. I might get my sky free but pay for my Sky+ sub. If you get one make sure they do not punt you one of the old recon boxes with the smaller HD (hmm guess I should say that is hard disk not high def now!).

Cheers Sanjoy.
I don't think I will bother now. I really need to ask myself why I am paying £37 per month through the winter. I think so far I have watched 3 A1GP races on Sky. The £37 would probably be better going into the Elise Fund :D

I just got Sky + and it has changed the way I watch telly...........

I now look a week ahead at the TV Guide and record what interests me. I then watch telly when it suits me as opposed to when things are on live...

Therefore - Irish rallying, super GT, race of champions etc etc gets recorded...............it means you can fast fwd through the 5th gear dross too

I also have a Windows Media Centre PC with Sky Multiroom which performs as similair role

It is well worth the money. Instead of payingh £10 a month for Skyplus take the Movies package for £12. May as well pay £2 more and get something in return ?

The picture quality is superb with instant rewind too

Er and set your alarm and phone up at 4am, you simply will not get through during normal times at this time of year. 500,000 potential new customers on the new customers line were simply dropped last Dec.
