Life & Times of an S2 Owner (Rant/biography!) - UPDATE!!!
So as some of you will know, after wanting an Elise since the original was released, I managed to procure an S2 (early 2001 model) back in March of this year, with the meager funds I had. It wasn't a perfect one, lets say a fixer upper as it had a tiny amount of damage to the front clam.... here's what's taken place in the last 6 months of ownership:
Within two weeks of ownership a cyclist punched a whole in the rear clam just below the petrol filler, above the wheel arch. So fist sized break clean through the clam. He cycled off, I never caught him and so have to pay for repairing it!
In early May I was reversing (very very slowly) off a driveway, caught the number plate on the lip of the road and tore it clean off, tearing two massive holes in the number plate clam.
In late May I was in a car park, while graciously letting a car out of another space, some idiot driver, reversed straight into the passenger side of the car, despite my best efforts to get out of the way. She destroyed the passenger side sill and despite admitting liability, due to all sorts of technicalities with her Insurance company, thus far I haven't seen a penny for it and it looks highly unlikely that I will.
In June whilst parked outside my office (while I was inside the office!) someone drove straight up the front of the clam, smashed it pretty severely and drove off, so again no insurance claim, no details, but even more damage!
For the entire month of July I tried to find the culprit during which time someone else repeated this feat again over the already damaged clam, further smashing it and destroying the mountings for the front grille! Again, no insurance, nothing, so more damage, no way to pay.
In August I hear a my car alarm go off while I'm at my desk (for the first time it actually goes off when someones hitting me!) I look out the window to see a County Council Road Maintenance vehicle driving off the front clam he's just reversed onto!!!! I run out of the office to stop him, as he appears to not have notices that he's hit the car (I genuinely think he didn't see it at all), however by the time I get out he's driven off down the road and I didn't get him or his number plate. Called the council and have a claim pending, but they insist they won't pay as I was the only witness (apart from a non-english speaking builder) and I didn't get a number plate!
Friday just gone, I'm at my desk at 7.30 in the morning and there's a knock on the office door, the foreman of the building site across the road (where the non-english speaking gent works) just says : - "I'm sorry I know you love you're car..."
I swiftly walk outside to find that they've wiped the top of the driver side clam off, above the wheel with a JCB!!! Of course because there was existing damage to the car front clam, their insurance company is insisting they'll pay a minimum amount out as the car was previously damaged
So the long and short of it is:
I love my car... more than you can possibly imagine. However, it's so badly damaged, I mean seriously bad, needs a service (I can't afford!), seriously needs suspension/toe links/bushing help as the Irish Roads have destroyed the car and it has probably about 10K (yes, sterling!) worth of actual damage to it, that I can't afford to fix!
So if StephenM is reading this, I hope this explains why I haven't gotten the car to you yet... it's all gone to sh*t to be honest! Believe me, if I can find the money I'll be over... but not just yet!
I'll post photos later, just having a rant... if anyone has any thoughts as to how best to fix this or if anyone is feeling charitable with a repaired/used Exige/Elise Clam for my S2... and if anyone has things like replacement headlights (that's right the JCB obliterated them!) and new wheel arch liners for both sides... and if anyone has a novel way to repair my suspension fully, I'm all ears!!
Thanks for listening.
Cillian.
