What happened to that Victor Meldrew bloke....?

Post by Victor Meldrew » Thu Mar 12, 2026 5:38 am

I'm almost there, not quite but nearly.....

Vicky failed her MOT... Not a small fail, a proper fail. She needed serious money spent on her to get her back to the condition she deserved and I made what I think was a sensible decision to put her on a SORN.

The offshore Oil industry has been on the wind down for a while now and I knew I had to get out and free from it. I stepped back from Lotus for a while to focus on my escape plan. I wanted to retire at 55. Not easy to do even with a good salary. In the end I didn't get a choice. My platform was shutdown and I was cast aside. There is no place for people with my skill set in Scotland, the green agenda don't want hydrocarbon processing specialists anymore. I know Mr McKeen has been hit with the same sh*t stick that got me. Neil I wish you the best in finding something else to focus on because it isn't Oil and Gas anymore.

I have not worked since May 2025. I was 53 years old with no option but to live on my redundancy, savings and investments to get me through till August 2026 when I can grab the Golden Goose. The pension pot, the tax free lump sum that will change my life.

Please, Please, Please, if you are not putting extra cash into a private pension do it now. For all you daft young ones out there it is the single most important thing I have ever done.

Four months to go before I pull the trigger on the biggest step change in my life. Come August everything changes. Elise parts will get an order for around £8k of parts needed to bring my baby back to the condition she deserves. Craig, be ready I will be giving you a call to do the bits I can't do myself. I'm too sore to be crawling around on the floor fitting exhausts. I already know you will look after me as you have always done.

I'm coming back bitches, and you better be ready for me because I have high expectations......
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Sorry to hear working and retirement plans were taken out your hands.
But good to hear your planning was good enough to get you through it.

Look forward to hearing about and seeing Vicky back on the road again, useful to have something to spend your pension on

ex-offshore skills are in demand (in theory) - is there anything with the electricity lot(SSE etc), or SGN (transmission changes) or are you handy at other stuff (obviously, being an Elise owner) ?

I think I'm actually enjoying this retired lark so I'm happy to put my feet up. I might look at doing some volenteering work if I start to get too bored.
