My brother wants to buy some decks...of course, he has impecable taste and has his eyes on Technics 1210s. Problem....£750+

I've tried suggesting others makes.
For example these:

but apparently they look like a spaceship.
Personally I think the 1210s would be wasted on him.
Any other suggestions?

vestax 2000, from what i hear they are far superior!

I have a friend who is selling a pair of Vestax PDX2000s . Tell your bro to do some research about them, they are ace. You have same speed up and down slide, but also a times 10 up and down. means you can mix more stuff together. also has dead stop and revese function. basically a much more versatile deck.

New, they're still in Technics price range

will find out and post. Poss. mixer and other gubbins available as well.

Aside from the initial cost (will also need a mixer), the problem with decks is the cost of having to constantly buy new vinyl.

He should buy a Torq controller http://www.maudio.co.uk/products/en_gb/ ... -main.html and get a copy of Ableton Live http://www.ableton.com/. He can then mix MP3's, wavs etc. (with hands on control) in Ableton live and use its built-in FX. Even if he needed to buy a laptop to run it, it's much more creative than decks (excluding turntablism) and cheaper in the long run. Also, once he gets bored of mixing other peoples music he can make his own in Live.

At last... a topic I have knowledge on!

I've been dj'ing in clubs for the last 20 years so here's my 2p worth:

Couple of options to go for.
1. Buy second hand 1200's or 1210 (1210's are black and 1200's are silver and normally a bit older.) They are bullet proof and unless they look REALLY bad then I'd go for s/h. The target light will probably not work which is no big deal. Just check the pitch adjuster against the red strobe at the side for accuarcy.
2. Buy really cheap 'dj in a box' decks first. If you can master mixing on cheap crappy decks, you'll be a mixmaster when you move onto 1210's.
3. Buy one 1210 and one KAM - or similar cheap deck.
4. Buiy the Vestax. They are a better performing turntable but will it still go round in 15 years time?
5. Pioneer CDJ1000's (or the 800's) Every club I work in now has these and have become the 1210's for a new generation. CDs aremore creative than vinyl and a lot cheaper as well. DJ magazine recently asked the world top 100 djs what format they use and ALL of them said they used CDs in at least part if not all of their sets. Don't listen to all the crap about CD DJs not being 'real djs'. PISH!
6. Check out what new digital format are out there that allow you to take mp3s etc off a laptop using coded 12" or CDs.

Hmmm, don't know about the Toon but Aberdeen Liquid....not great.
