Another nail in the driving coffin?

Post by tonyg » Fri Feb 17, 2017 5:00 pm

Just been reading the reviews of the new BMW 5 series on Pistonheads and according to the info there won't be a manual gearbox available.

Sign of the times, buyers like the idea of having "the ultimate driving machine" but in reality they want a big old comfy luxo-barge for the commute. As I get older I really fancy a CVT elise :D changing gears is tedious.

Can't have been many previous shape manual 5 series?

Perhaps only boggo models such as 520i or whatever it was called...

Last manual M5 was the E39 which ended around 14/15yrs ago!

I love the idea of electric. Does motor rpm have no bearing on power consumption?

I've driven manual and auto versions of the current F10 5 series and the auto is vastly superior. The manual is pretty notchy and not particularly satisfying to use whereas the 8 speed zf auto is superb and suits the car far better. I like manuals generally but in this case I reckon it is no great loss.

The new 5 looks superb BTW. If you have to munch big miles I can think of few better cars at any price to do it in.

Gearshift on Lisa's new TT is rather slick. Hate to admit it but I'm impressed.

I think the modern diesels suit the auto far better than a manual. Even the 2 litre bmw petrol in Mrs J's Z4 drives like a diesel, all low down grunt and diddly squat up the rev range, it doesn't even reach the red line FFS.

I think the autos also make it easier to fiddle the co2 figures, not that I am suggesting that goes on........

I must still be a bit behind the times because I have an M2 on order and I am going manual, not doppelkaplung or whatever they call it.

There is little point having a manual gearbox in a 5 series period - the auto car is SO much better and who is going to use one on track?

Strongly suspect the M5 will be the same....

And this is coming from someone who didn't buyt the new GT3 initially because it had an auto - then I drove it..................

Yep. The road tax on my auto M135i is a good bit lower than the manual, due to the very long 8th gear.. After the impressiveness of the auto wears off, I kinda missed not having the manual, so I'd concur with your decision on the manual M2 :thumbsup
