Could be how you've done the check... over wireless? connected to router? etc.
If you're sure you aren't getting the 100mb though, give them a bell. If it's over cable then it's not the same as the 'up to' nonsense you get over phone lines. You should be getting very close to the 100mb so they'll fix it if you're not.
Couple times over the years I've had them out to adjust something in the street when more and more people have become connected. Needs tuned occasionally but overall I've always had the speeds they've advertised over the last 8 years or so. Currently 200mb+

whilst what you have said is 100% (as in checkout wifi etc.) still have the same deal with contention, ie. just how many of you are there on the same bit of backbone/local infrastructure? (no idea what Virgin's targets are here, but I would assume reality is they vary a lot depending on where you are).
for example, I am on FTTC, this is typically what I get:
My neighbor is served from the same Openreach cab that I am, yet his is shockingly bad, depending on the time of day, he's on Talk-Talk - the problem is they have not paid (Openreach) for sufficient back-haul, so come ~5PM when the kids get home, his service grinds to a halt (his line to the cab is synced the same as mine, 80/20).
I use Zen as my provider, and they have more than enough backbone bandwidth for the customers they have, I see zero time dependent issues.
PS. out of interest, what ping-times are you getting?

Mate had Virgin and was getting just over his speed.
Another Zen customer here and speed never changes.

When the line had a problem it was fixed by BT within 48 hours.

Impressive!
(what are you supposed to get?)
That said, as I said before, there has to be some variance between area's, the question is how good is it where David is?

I'm on their 200mb offering.
Not really noticed any difference going from the likes of 150 - 200 when that happened tbh.. but it's good for pub top trumps!
Handy when doing multi-way Video Conference stuff on the work laptop with SE and Youtube etc all on my Mac too. Don't notice any drop in performance on the work VCs when downloading huge files on the Mac either.

We have a decent speed test server at my work you're welcome to try -
http://www.pulsant.com/speed-test/
Usually accurate for speeds up to around 700Mbps
The other ones quoted in the thread look like speedtest.net - which is built with the same Ookla test service - but they are frequently busy as it is a well known site so won't always be 100% accurate.
Cheers

I take it all back .....
My PC is in the back room & the new router is in the front room now.
Because its a old house - wifi is crap - so i bought one of those ethernet mains things.
Using that the download speed is about 25
I moved the PC to the front room & plugged it straight into the router & the speed was 105 !

Also usually a good idea to bin the free router supplied by the isp and get a proper one. Got fed up rebooting my superhub weekly and since replacing it with an Asus AC68u, I rarely have to reboot and my speeds went up substantially too.. as well as better range etc etc
