Scottish Elises

Hi folks,

Currently looking to join the club. Been researching and reading this past few months and decided on the 111R. At the moment, I am speaking to Will Blackham about a 111R he has coming in but thought I'd see if anyone was thinking about selling one in Scotland.

Any feedback would be appreciated!

IMO - 111R is a superb choice. The missus had one for years, which we ended up upgrading with the factory supercharger. Great engine for the car though - most will have had the cam change point dropped with a remap (the factory again, released an update with that) which is worth checking if it's been done and if not, getting done. As standard, it would run out of puff a little before the power cam kicked in, which made more of an event of the cam change, but got annoying.

Yes, I've been eyeing up some future upgrades on H111. Dropping the cam switch by 500rpm seems like a cheap worthwhile upgrade.

The 111R I'm looking at has a new radiator fitted but its just a newer model of the stock radiator not an after market alloy one - I believe these still have a weak point with leaking? Additionally, it has had exhaust swapped out for Larini SS exhaust.

Based on my experience with a 2006 Elise S. Ardent Red is the best colour by the way!

Check if it has (or had?) AC fitted. The alloy sill pipes leak and need to be replaced with rubber hoses, cost is ~£800 at a dealer.
I've noticed that Will and Johnny don't bother replacing the pipes and would rather sell the car with the AC listed as non-operational or they don't even mention it's fitted.

Check if the heater fan resistor pack has been replaced. If faulty the heater fan stops working on one speed, then another until it's dead. With luck it was replaced at the same time as the radiator.

After 10 years and 45k miles the springs & dampers will be well past their best. Check if they have been replaced.

The handbrake cable rubs on the leading rear wishbone. Eventually the rubber outer fails, water gets inside and the cables seizes. The cable can also knock against the wishbone over bumps which sounds like a damper has failed.

Make sure the tyres are a matched set of Yokohama Advan AD07s or AD08s.

Have the wheels & rear defuser powder coated black, it makes a huge improvement to the look of the car!

I've asked Will;

.Rear springs and dampeners replaced but not front.
.2 x Gooodyear F1 on rear, AD07s on front
.Resistor pack apparently changed by previous owner and fan works on all 3 speeds.
.He said "It does have a/c as an extra option fitted, but I didn't put that on the advert! No, I have no record of the pipes being changed."

I agree, I really like the red. I really want to get a hard top and thought about getting a gloss black one - not sure if that would be good taste or not!

Hardtop wise, do it. Make it your own. Elises tend to be quite individual, it's something I love about them. Seeing 2 identical ones is rare.
The hardtop would look fine in black, and also mean an easy resell if you ever decide that it's not worth having (I have an S1 with a hardtop which has hung on my garage wall since I moved house 4.5 years ago, though I did use it when the car saw winter use as it was warmer, albeit noisier and it leaked more, but an S2 should be better there too..)

For what it's worth (and perhaps for some balance?) I'd keep the wheels silver. For me, black wheels cheapen or age cars, though anthracite is nice...

A SE member has got in touch with a 111R + SC. Just trying to find a company that will insure me!

It comes with a hard top!

I got my N/A Exige remapped from Hangar 111 - they lowered the cam change by 500rpm - which makes a big difference if you are on the track.
They also claim 8bhp more with induction & sports exhaust.......

Do check out the recommendations in the Insurance sub forum. Of course, if you're very young, some of the specialists won't look at you.

Depending on what you have had previously a 111R+SC / Factory SC is the way I would go! Good luck!
