Busted S1 Radiator

Post by scott.a » Fri Sep 30, 2016 8:10 pm

Radiator has gone and is now leaking like a sieve.

https://www.eliseparts.com/products/sho ... -radiator/ looks like a decent replacement for the one that is on there. any other options im missing or is that the best option?

Does anyone have a guide for removing the radiator? Presuming the front clam will come off then unbolt the radiator from the mounting?

Once you get the front clam off, it's pretty straight forward. Consider changing the fan at the same time as the bearings tend to go, and the horn add that's a clam off job to do..! Also the front toe post if it's not been done as they rot pretty badly, stick a stainless one in. Silicon hoses are the other thing I did when I races my rad..

You might want to get some new fan mount brackets too as they

Once it's back together, search on here for a bleed guide.

Unbelievable the number of Elise owners Graham that do not have P&L. I do not understand it, £75 or so a year and it is difficult to find out why they do not take it out.

Uber sensible Campbell says that he is too pikey, but surely that is a contradiction in terms? An Elise is going to break down, especially the older ones, HGF is number one on the list, so why pay £500 when you can be covered for a fraction of that?

Maybe you should do one of your Surveys on it Dom.

Do the AA have to be involved to recover your car for P&L to be invoked?

I thought they were managing to worm out of a lot of claims these days which is why I don't have it any more, do they still cover HGF and Alternators etc on older Elises, or is it all classed as wear and tear due to age?

You have to be an AA Member to take out P&L, so I can understand it if an owner does not want to use AA for breakdown.

It will quite naturally not cover wear and tear Mark apart for batteries which is barely worth claiming for, but it will cover a non working alternator, water pump, starter motor etc, a clutch if there is any sign of mechanical failure but not just worn plates. Definately HGF. You have to know how to use the system when it is borderline, the attending AA Patrol will not drive your car, if you think it is a CV joint going by the noise he will accept that and it is upto the garage to diagnose and report. Likewise a worn clutch could have a spring that had snapped or slipped off. If you think that they will wriggle out of something then play them at their own game and prepare for it before the report from the garage goes in.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, since I had my first Elise in '99 I have had well into double figures of successful claims that has saved me thousands. I also had the family cars covered as well so there were many claims there also.

Sorry, missed that.

Yes you have to call the AA and they have to attend the car as per a normal breakdown for the P&L cover.

I did have an HGF repaired on my S1 by them but I thought I heard on the grape vine since the good old days that they were wiggling out of claims?

Some things are cut and dried, experience helps with others as to how to word it.

Thanks Tut. That's part of my reluctance. Staging a breakdown etc...

Very rarely have I actually been stranded.

Pro Alloy Versus Elisparts Aluminium rad - Whats the pro's & cons other than the eliseparts one is £100 less?

Also whats the recommended antifreeze for a S1?

AA are a waste of time. Don't pay out and charge a fortune come renewal time. RAC been far better in my experience.
