Heading west this weekend for a mates 21st to their holiday house and just been planning the route - not been over that way before - anyone know good roads?

Was meant to be taking the van as we are taking the moto-x bikes and quad, but its too nice a day to be driving a van, so they have been given to another boy whos taking his van instead!

here is the plan.....

They are just all really good roads!

You can go via Bute too, catch a ferry from Largs or Wemyss bay (can't remember which) then another from teh top end and go via tighnabruich but as i remember that road down to Lochgilphead is pretty special...

Looks like the best way to go JJ, just watch out for cops, last time I was on the bit after "the rest and be thankfull" and the oyster bar, there was a cop car well hidden at the end of one of the straights, just at the junction to Strachur.

They are also know to patrol various other stretches of the road. Have seen them in lay-byes between the oyster bar and Inverary too, and was once stopped other other side of Inverary, after passing un-marked Saab  but he was the only occupent, so was let of with a 'talking too'

Good roads outh and north from Lochgilphead too. Some mad locals about too, they used to 'time trial' between Lochgilphead and Tarbert (A83) can't remember my best time :D

/brother used to stay in Tarbert, mate in Lochgilhead/

Just been speaking to my mate, they`ve got some awesome toys up there - supercharged honda quads and jetbikes..... Its been nice knowing you guys! :D

As Mack said I have seen plenty of marked and unmarked cars sitting at that exact spot.

2 cars I seen not so long ago that were unmarked....

1. Old shape BMW 5 series, 530d ?, 53 plate ? Navy blue, rear light clusters are red/orange not tinted.

2. Old shape BMW 5 series, 530d ?, 53 plate ? Silver, rear light clusters are red/orange not tinted.

front headlights on both were like this...

Driven that road hundreds of times, as said watch out for cops. The big straight between the Rest and be thankfull and Cairndow is their favourite.

*ahem, see how long it takes to do the 24 miles from Inverary to Lochgilphead, starting and ending at the 30 zones

I had a lucky escape with the blue BMW two weeks ago luckily they decided to stop a motorbike who was trying to catch me up (miserable bast*rds) just as I came to Loch Fyne after the long straight.

By the way dont get the ferry from Largs it only goes to Cumbrae the ferry from Wemyss Bay goes to Bute :D The ferry from Gourock to Dunoon gives you some nice windy roads to play on as you drive back to Loch Fyne if you want an alternative route. The Hunters Quay ferry is better than the Caladonian McBrayne one in my opinion.

Have a great run.

If you stop at the loch front at Lochgilphead you will get surrounded by hundreds of kids on their bikes.

My 2p, prob too late, but....

As above..all good roads and bad cops, tho once you're past Inverary it's usually ok. Cop I know over there said that they concentrate on the Glasgow racers, and most don't go much further than Crailaraich or Inverary on a day out.

Alternative route via western ferry (NOT cal-mac!) from gourock- the drive up loch eck to stachur is brilliant. BTW don't buy tickets on the boat...'Stevies' on main street, Gourock sells them half-price!

If you get the chance, road down to Campbeltown is one of the best drives ever IMO if the weather is reasonable, and not too much traffic out of holiday season.

Going via Oban is a good road too. Took the car this way on my first weekend of ownership in the worst rain I've seen..in hindsight I should've been in many a field  but boy did it give me that 'post -coital' feelin u only get from our cars!

Must organise a run to this part of the world some time....

Must advise caution on that one, last time we had a run in Argyll they had half a dozen traffic cars out looking for us. We eventually got cornered by a couple outside Oban.

The guys were nice enough about us being out on a run, but we were made perfectly clear that it was to be kept to the speed limit. I think we passed another 4 Police cars on the way home.
