Jerry Cans

Post by rawsco » Tue Jul 12, 2016 10:13 pm

Nearly bought a 20litre Jerry can at halfrauds this evening to save the inevitable trip to the fuel station half way through a 2 hour track day. And following a near miss out of fuel situation after SIDC due to the lotus spec fuel gauge randomness.

Anyhow I stopped and thought about it... is a 20litre metal can ok to store and transport fuel? A bit of googling reveals conflicting information on buying fuel, storing it transporting it and fuel stations actually selling you it when decanting into a 20litre can.

Thoughts? Should I just buy one and get on with it?

Most of the petrol stations have signs up saying you can't use 20L Jerry cans but I use one constantly for motorbike Trackdays and never had any trouble. No idea if it will fit in the boot of an Elise though.

I have a 20 litre one like you said, sits in the passenger footwell perfectly.

Not ideal if carrying s passenger however.

(that's why I think Mike will do fine, that and his lack of imagination).

I regularly fill up 3 x 20 litre Jerry Cans for going back and forward to the airfield.
I always try to be mildly discrete but have never had an issue in 5 years.

I now use a 20L Jerry can after have a pump switched off on me when filling multiple 10L cans. Aparently it is illegal to fill more than two cans at a petrol station - at least that's what I was told. I believe there are rules on storage and transportation but never looked into them.

I regularly use one or two 20L cans in the pax side of the 211. I have plastic VP ones.

Big sign at local Esso garage saying max 10litres in plastic 20litres in metal max 2 containers. Max storage at home 30litres :-)

Off to halfrauds at lunch for a Jerry can.

Er yes, make sure you do that. :)

Also 20ltr Jerry can in the pax footwell is the way I've always done it too in the Elise. Although I usually carry a 5ltr plastic one now most of the time in case I run out.
