The car was on Auto Pilot and crashed into the back of a lorry, driver killed.

Hopefully I will be off the road when these things become the norm. Get a bloody train or bus if you do not want to hold onto a steering wheel.

Heard a bit about this on the radio this morning - the car couldn't differentiate between the white lorry and the "bright white sky", if I understood the explanation given correctly.

Yep I don't think I could ever trust a computer to drive my car for me.

I hadn't realised the auto pilot only uses cameras. It's also got short range (16 feet) ultrasound but that's not going to be much use at speed. Presumably they'll be building radar into later versions to avoid these issues. Either that or demanding all trucks be painted scandal green.

Ironic that the driver had in the last month posted on Facebook that it had saved him from a previous crash and was a fantastic feature ....... :?
The truck was crossing in front of him and, as said above, the camera didn't differentiate between the wide side panel and white sky - unbelievable that there's no radar sensor fitted!!

No it crashed into the side of a truck which turned across his path

So he was driving along perfectly legally and a lorry suddenly pulled across the road infront of him

Neither the car OR the driver had time to brake

The Lorry driver is being charged

Oh and PS

the same day 94 perfectly safe humans killed themselves in a car in the USA

I would still rather be driven by a tesla then your average american

The Tesla software actually read the situation wrongly.

It saw a white van against a bright sky with a lorry clearance almost the height of the car, did not brake, and the car went under the lorry with the windscreen taking the driver out.

However in the meantime many others were probably killed driving into the sun and doing the same thing manually.

And don't forget

The driver of the tesla was killed because a human truck driver did something he should not of done.

I am not afraid or worried by the rise of the automated car as i think it will greatly reduce the amount of dumb people driving cars

what we don't know is what would have been the outcome even if the car had 'seen' the truck, there's not guarantee it would have been able to avid the accident.

Also

While this is a weak point we must realise this weak point can be overcome with software and hardware changes

Being stupid like you typical human can't be overcome with hardware and software changes

Tesla autopilot is already safer per mile then Americans

It isn't up to UK standards yet for the simple fact that it hasn't driven in the UK long enough to total up enough miles to pas that milestone

solution software is only as good as the developer / architect.
that relies on their experience :(

no, it relies on testing/real-world data.

Tesla (and Google etc) are logging thousands of miles of data every day.
