Talk to me about upgrades

Post by rawsco » Fri Jun 24, 2016 9:08 am

So if I was going to spend a grand on my Exige S PP 240 then where should it go. Couple of things, I'm already spending on driver training and lowering isn't an option as the splitter already scrapes a bit on the drive entrance...

Car is standard bar 2bular back box and TRD induction.

Alternatively should I buy a V6?

When I was turning my S1 into a competition car I had several discussions with Chris Randle about the upgrade path. One of the most important things for track is tire pressure consistency. He suggested that you are wasting your time on suspension brakes etc if you are not optimizing your tires.

I fitted a Tire Pressure Monitoring System on the car. Surprising how much the pressures changed through a day of driving, road and track. There are a few options on the market now from around £100 to a STACK system which is stupid money. Some feedback tire temperature at the same time but it is the temperature of the air inside the tire not the tire surface.
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Good point re tyres. I always paid a lot of attention to this in the early days, when I had the time. Latterly, I'm just running wot Robin fitted after he took UJI on a Euro tour without me :-( Felt recently that the handling was all pretty non-Elise like and was ready to junk the suspension. I was directed to check tyres first, both brand and pressure. Guess what. Pressures all over the shop and none anywhere near high enough :cry

5 mins with the pressure gauge and compressor and my S1 was back to what I remember. Shocking story of neglect, but saved me a few hundred quid on new dampers!!

As for other options, Ross, I reckon you have a very well sorted Exige already. So if you have an itch for better, I think you have answered your own question. V6 here you come :D

[I also know where a rather tasty Evora is for sale, however you are probably still in Exige territory while there are just the two of you  ]

You could go for the 260 upgrade although I'm sure the driver training will do more for you than 20hp.
2bular sports cat to go with your back box? I had that on mine and it sounded awesome.

If you're doing the driver training then I'd spend the grand on more trackdays and tyres. No short cuts to experience. And it's much more fun than 20bhp that you won't notice. :)

This is where Im at... I think... I think personally my first change would be to fit better shocks and drop it an inch but I can't do that. Sticking it in the consumables budget is a good suggestion and might be where it's at for now but for me it's not about being faster than tut but about enjoyment... So, maybe some go faster stripes?

As an aside, I had a few laps and a debrief with Sandy at the SIDC day last month and got a fair bit out it, I'm about to book a half day with an instructor can anyone suggest a good instructor at KH other than Sandy or just stick with Sandy? R

Not sure what spec your car is but I thought the 240's were pretty much sorted out of the box?

In the end I spent thousands on my S1 and the two "upgrades" that made the biggest improvement were the tire thingy, from a consistency point and having a better understanding of what the tires were doing so you knew when you could push harder and when you had to back off..

The second upgrade was a change to Carbon Loraine pads all round. The brake feel was fantastic, very easy to modulate and consistent from cold to hot.. Only down side was the squealing noise during light road use...

You don't have to lower it with new suspension. It does make a difference and can be at the same ride height.

What suspension is on it now?

That was a complement Campbell, means he is now a member of my exclusive Dickheads Club, though normally that applies to tyres.

Ross,
Send your ECU to Hangar 111 for a remap.
They thing that done it for me was the cam change lowered by 500 rpm.
makes it more usable.
also a minimal 8bhp on the remap - but that was for my N/A 189bhp

and the 2bular manifold is meant to give you 22bhp
