"So far, no petrol-powered production car has managed to hit the same speed in a comparable time."

so, let's get this clear.
this is a one-off, non-production car that's faster than a production car?
May I remind you that an F1 car runs on petrol, and is a tad quicker than this POS?
or if you really want to go drag racing, how about this:

just another example of BBC reporting being so blatantly crap.

2015 Red Bull F1 car 0-60 1.7 secs.

Twas always my understanding that F1 cars have relatively pish 0-60 cos the downforce isn't effective at these speeds, this limiting traction

2015 Red bull probably the worst car they have ever fielded (engine wise)
I recon Vettel's start at the Canadian GP would be the benchmark

Some bits of that did come off a production line
like the headlights
The real clever stuff with this formula student car is they will have torque vectoring. The driver won't be driving the car they will just be telling the computer where they are going. The computer will be handling under and oversteer and it will be helping the driver out with the steering
I can imagine someone in formula student will be looking if the car needs to actually have the student installed

This in spades. Real shame the BBC felt the need to write a different story to the actual news! Electric (or at least non petrol) cars are the future. These sort of things help the technologies, though I doubt we'll all end up driving around in single person 1990s formula ford looking mobiles!
For me, the Top Gear Tesla vs. muscle car drag was probably more important than what the beeb are trying to say there. Electric cars can have some serious acceleration. Just a shame they end up weighing so much...

Yep a drivetrain that can respond in milliseconds altering torque to each wheel independently without waiting for an combustion engine to wake up or a hydraulic pump to build up pressure
You think turbo charged cars have a bad throttle lag
Go drive an EV
It makes a K-series seem ponderous

exactly, EV's are improving at a phenomenal rate thanks to Elon, shame the BBC can't actually write accurate/coherent stories to cover it.
