Just got an email through from classic and performance car predicting cars which will be appreciating:

Had a quick look and there appears to be a lovely 325i Sport for £25k:

Very strong figures as you can probably get an M3 for a bit more money (albeit with more miles). However if money was no object then it would definitely be in my garage in a shot

It says cars that are reliable; not necessary appreciating? Short term unless you're buying and selling well, the vast majority of old cars aren't going to make you much if you use them. I was very lucky a couple of times with the old SLs but if I'd kept them longer term any real gains would have been wiped out in fixing and running. Same I reckon for 90% of old cars but people only talk about the ones which have made huge jumps like old RS Porsche and Ferraris.

jj, yep that was me scanning the email so your right that they may not appreciate.

Similar to you most of my forays into classic cars has been a mixed bag and mostly losing out when you factor in running and repair costs into the equation. However these losses have been a lot less than taking a new car out of the showroom so not been a major loss over the years. Maybe if I was more mechanical these losses would be considerably less.

Admit the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet at £2k purchase, £2k expenditure over 1 yr and selling at £2300 (to move into a 911 964) was probably not the most astute purchase!!!

The BMW 325 E30 I had a few years ago trebled in value during the year or two that I owned it.



....okay I bought it for £200 and sold it for £600

That was due to the extensive loving care that Hambo and I also put into the car, if you'll remember

I hear 944's are one the rise, and the S2 is obviously the car you want

I don't think you will have issues selling an S2 and suspect lots of people will be at your door if you price it correctly.

Loving care? Like you say, I recall a lot of hammers, angle grinding and swearing. Remember the exhaust system made from an old metal bunk bed we found in the scrap heap. Straight six with two straight uninterrupted pipes....

Remember our subtle spare engine removal?

You're right - average modern classics are just plain silly money, why folk are willing to spend that is beyond me...

...and when the bubble bursts in 2/5/10yrs, you'll still get your 25k back for yer R400, and will have had oodles more fun owning and driving it.

My mate bought a minter for £3k back in the day, great pup, so much so it led to em buying the racing Beemer - a 320ishwd for grass testing! Sideways from start to finish it was always the slowest but most sideways vehicle in the event and the only one that got a round of applause from the entire paddock and then driven home! Great sheds

I've had a few(lots and lots) e30's (and still have a two)

I love them, but 25k for a 325i sport - no chance.

However, knowing Matt and the guys at hollybrook, it will be a perfect example.

Not what id be spending 25k on regardless of how much I like them.

Its a 318is. (Geek faction)

if you were looking to invest in an e30, my money would be on a European 320is. rarest model out there, s14 (e30 m3 2ltr engine) only sold to some euro countries and south Africa so not rotten etc. more commonly known as a 'baby m3' and still reasonable money in Europe.
