BMW M5 F10

I sold my BMW X5 a couple of months back and been keeping my eye out for a practical replacement that would be good to drive, my mate has suggested I take a look at BMW M5s.
I've had a look, read reviews and have to say I'm very impressed; there seems to be an awful lot of them available that are 2-3 years old and still under warranty, does anyone have any experience of owning or driving these?

I've driven one and really liked it. Came very close to buying one. As an everyday car is pretty much perfect at the time I just felt the interior wasn't up to the spec of my six series but engine wise it's fantastic the heads up display stuff is very impressive and I'm still thinking about getting one .
However I would suggest you also consider the Tesla model S

A friend of a friend had an M5, he loved it but the only thing that really annoyed him was the range within the tank. Its a performance car so he was not expecting Prius mileage but the difference between spirited driving/motorway cruising did not have a noticeable difference in the range. Think he eventually got annoyed at having to fill up each time going up to Edinburgh/Aberdeen and then filling up on the way back down.
May be getting mixed up with M3's of old but sure someone will correct me - make sure the 1,000 mile service has been done to the letter as if this has been delayed then its very likely that you won't get an extended warranty.

Thanks guys, I believe it's the older shape with the 5.0 v10 engine that was terrible on fuel, the newer 4.4 v8 Twin Turbo is apparently much better, but I've never heard of anyone with first hand experience of that.
From what I've read, the run in service needs to be carried out between 1200-2000 miles before it affects warranties and resale values.... Again, would be worth confirming.

Also as a slightly different tack, do not discount the Alpina 5 series, maybe a little bit less focussed but a viable alternative if you want to spend more time as a daily driver:

Obviously D5 is a lot more frugal

There are a lot of you tube vids of some highly tuned versions. Sounds great too.

If you want a TwinTurbo V8 560 hp car is never really going to be a proper consideration point for buying one surely?
If it is to even consider it and get a Tesla model S .
Still toying with so cool it would be to never visit a petrol station for my day today use again

Can't comment on the F10 M5 RE: fuel economy, but I had a spin in a new Audi RS6 a couple of months back (also a twin-turbo V8 with 560+ bhp) and apparently mid 20's mpg is easily achieved, with 30 mpg possible around a 60 mph average (say, a dynamic cruise controlled crawl up the A9 with its average speed cameras).
The RS6 had a system that shut down 4 cylinders below a certain RPM / throttle opening for fuel economy - Imagine the M5 has something similar?

Pete B has the S6 that does that.
