Scottish Elises

I decided to change my tyres back to the Pirellis for tomorrows trackday and noticed that both rear ZZR tyres have delaminated on the inside. The psi was at 25(cold) but obviously this is too low for the heavier V6 car. The next time that I have a set of these fitted, I will be running them on at least 30 to save this happening again Fronts are ok ,but rears are now binned. Bummer

Hi Steve,

That seems to have happened to quite a few of us, I had two tyres do that all the way round the circumference. Doug had one that parted company I think.

It's a shame this happens so easily as they are a great tyre, but I was a bit pi--ed off at throwing away two tyres with nearly 4mm tread left. However as we were going to Spa i thought that the best option.

Not sure I would be confident "leaning" on them on the road let alone the track. How old were the tyres?

Definitely to do with low tyre pressures I reckon. 25psi is quite low for such a heavy car. Even on my Elise I run the rears at 29psi.

They are quite strong even when like that. Dougs went way past that to the point the canvas was showing and they still held together.

What I meant was that Steve would not notice.

Bought for last years Frolic and thought that they would have done for a couple more trackdays at KH.

They last forever on the Elise, so it must be the extra weight of the Exige.

Si had the same issue with his on the V6.

As for all the talk about how long they last, seem no different to AD08r's from comparing mine with BigD's ZZR's with us both having similar cars and driving styles.

ZZR's are better in the dry taking longer to go off were as the AD08r's are better in the wet from my experience.

The zzr's are fine in the wet. It's the torrential downpours on the way home when they are pretty bald that's the issue. Also I couldn't get mine to go off at all.
Probably similar wear Mike but they do grip and last for dozens of track days which none of the other cut slicks will do.

I only took ad08's to spa in case it snowed.

That's a very good point, how could I overlook that. Similar driving styles, I think not!

Thanks for the comments and I only have myself to blame for not putting more air in the tyres. Avon site says minimum of 22psi but I reckon that I need to increase the rear to 30-35psi cold 'then reduce when hot'.

The ZZRs had done four trackdays at the Frolic last year, so it was worth it for that alone. Amazing tyre in the dry and will probably get another set of rears. I wonder if the 888r is available in Exige V6 sizes yet and how they compare to the ZZRs??

Tut, Your right, I probably would not have noticed that my tyre had started to delaminate while driving, but I would much rather have it this way instead of it happening on the road or track with the chance of coming off and having an accident. In fact no, I would much rather have had enough air in the tyre in the first place. The Pirellis psi are 32front and 38rear so it seems obvious now that 25 in the rear is far too low.

Big differences in pressures, S1 N3 I used to run 19/21 on track which seems low but somebody recommended that to me.

S2 N3 I will start at 24/26 and see how that feels. I think that I have AO 48's on all round, I thought that there was an R on the end but mine don't have it.
