Free Satellite installation

Post by tut » Sun Mar 06, 2016 10:58 am

Just found out after I had paid out for it that we qualify in Scotland for free installation if you have a download speed of under 2mb's. You fill in details on the website and are sent a coupon with a value of £350 which is given to the Installer.

However you still have to pay the monthly Data charge, in my case £45 for 25GB, but I do get the full 20mb download speed.

Tut, can you please share the details of this offer? My folks are at Fearnan with 0.5mb on a good day.

Renny,

Before you go via satellite I would also explore using the mobile network at your parents.

Satellite did not work for me due to the latency however I am lucky that I have a 4G signal so have been using O2 for my wifi when working. I have an O2 mifi with 20Gb limit for £27/month which was substantially cheaper than the satellite. Admit that it becomes limited for any online downloads due to the capacity limit but suspect your parents won't be looking to download stuff if they are still stuck with 0.5Mb.

I would also check out http://www.scotlandsuperfast.com/ to see when Fibre may be reaching their area.

They are several miles away from the Kenmore exchange which won't start to get high speed BB for at least 18 months. 4G was limited and it's a stone walled cottage which does a great job of attenuating wireless signals. Positioning the router and extender to get an acceptable wireless signal for their iPad was bad enough.
What problems did the long latency create George, was it mainly browsing?

Renny,

Had some issues with web browsing, streaming videos and IP phone usage due to latency.

However the majority of the issues were due to my work usage. Required lots of serial hits to a database which meant that by the time each piece of information went up/down via the satellite I was actually quicker on my 1Mb fixed line.

Admit it's not your normal home user issue but certainly found out that it's better to explore 4G usage prior to thinking about satellite. See it as very much a last resort if your fixed line speed is bad.
