Unfortunately this is a sign of things to come for many a modern business.

LinkedIn, like many other modern online businesses generate revenue through advertising deals. Unfortunately these huge companies who use these heavy traffic online spaces will always be looking for the more heavily populated online spaces.

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and others all rely solely on advertising deals for survival. It's just a matter of time before other communication platforms take over on ratings and secure the bigger deals from the multi national Co's looking to get in that space.

Whatever happened to MSN and Bebo for example?

Come to think about it, what do these companies actually have to offer, other than a platform where people like us choose to communicate?

Bring back face to face and paper and pen communication.

It's a correction. They happen. LinkedIn does have value but just not that high.

I agree on face to face time, but also value the massively wider professional relationship opportunities LinkedIn has brought me.

Quite possibly would not be in business today without it.

I think LinkedIn has long term value in the service it delivers - it is possible that it can make money simply by being some form of dating agency for professionals - recruitment is time consuming and expensive - if (and it's a big if) LinkedIn can de-risk/cost reduce that process then it will be paid for by its users rather than ads; of course there are hybrid models and that is what they use today.

Of course somebody else could set up a similar platform (no doubt they exist already) - but the barrier to entry is large because of the network of users already on LI.

I wonder about the rest - clearly there's a slow migration of users across platforms - I managed to avoid FB, Twitter - but it turns out that an easy way of getting the attention of my kids is to use What'sApp, so I do - and actually I can also reach Katie with it, not because I couldn't just text her, but she responds to What'sApp because all her pals gabble away on it. When the herd leaders move on, in due course I'll follow simply because I want to ask them what they want for dinner :-)

We have reached the point where there could exist an infinity of communications platforms and I suspect it's only fashion that dictates which one we use on any given day.

Linkedin has genuinely been an introduction to work for my business, although it has gone a bit farcebook lately...
