Scottish Elises

Not the most exciting what car/ post.

I'm changing jobs in jan so will have a 400 mile a week commute south on m74 - no major traffic, virtually all motorway.

I'd love to go electric but don't want to commit to purchase cost at moment. Looked at a 2006 civic 1.8 tonight which was generally decent but not the most exciting. Anyone owned similar and if so anything to look out for?

It's due a service which Garage said they would do along with a full mot, has some scratches and marks as you'd expect but generally good condition. Service stamps seems decent and mileage isn't too high. Interior is leather and all good, the heated seats work. Revs cleanly and gearbox is sweet, brakes seem fine. Rear tyres will need changed but haggled a little off it and i would switch for good winters anyway.

I looking for a reliable comfy safe car which does 40+ mpg without big bills .

I've got a similar Civic, 2007 type S 1.8 v-tech, I struggle to get 40+mpg, but then I do 300 miles a week cross county on A and B roads. I'm probably averaging about 37. It's a steady, comfy car that revs highly, but it's no Elise!

ten thousand taxi drivers can't be wrong and you get to do the silently crawl along in traffic bit

anything Luxo barge-esk that might do that? Would be a vastly more relaxing place to spend time?

Had a look at Phaeton or old 7 series D ? Something that isolates, and distresses and is comfy would be my choice.

I'm looking to spend £3k tops - first bairn on the way and I want to get feet under the table at new job before I commit to any big purchases. Not a BMW fan and think phaeton would be more expensive. I'm put off most diesels due to risk of a dmf fail resulting in a £1k bill, ruining the mpg savings. I did have a peak at a few saabs though , cheap enough to be worthwhile.

Can cope with it being no Elise ! Think I need something dull then I'll appreciate Elise more !

Test drove it twice but didn't love it. Had a few niggles they were willing to fix and generally an honest decent car and garage.

Test drove a lpg converted x trail today near Glasgow airport. What a dog. Huge smoke at start up, crashed over her little bump and then I stuck my finger through the sill when digging about underneath garage offered to get it a 12 month not despite them not willing to spend any money on it. I politely declined.

Perhaps a volvo then? Few I have been in have been extremely comfortable.

Yeah keeping an eye on s60 D5s, alfa gt( recipe for disaster) and mg zt diesels. Had a petrol zt before and for the money it's good

Wise choice on the XC...advert does not fill me with confidence.
I would go for the volvo for comfort (i would like buying such a cheaper car from a dealer though...maybe thats just me)

For what you need it for, the Volvo looks good to me,... BUT, I am not sure if I'd be rushing for a duel fuel car of that age - the gas system may prove to be high maintenance / unreliable (see plenty of adds for cheap older dual fuel cars that don't actually have the gas working).

I ignored all good advice and my own requirements ts and bought a jeep cherokee.

Got a to do list already ( service plus thermostat and new tyres ) but its a nice big wagon.
