Boyndie (SE and personal)

Post by istoo » Sun Nov 08, 2015 1:32 pm

Does anyone here go/take part/ comet at Boyndie at all, if so i would be very interested to here how to go about it. Was at Knockhill yesterday on the teen drive thing with my eldest, and again he was flying around the kart track. He did a half season racing karts in Malaysia a few years and did pretty well on a knackered rented kart, but he lost interest coming back to the UK, but now he is keen again.. plus it gets the idea of a death cycle out of his head...

and

I booked a half day group event at Boyndie earlier in the year but ended up being out of country so swapped the space with colleague, so was thinking about organising another, i know i need at least 25 to make it viable, would any of the SE'ers here be interested, if i get a slot?

Hi there. I go/compete/ am a member of boyndie in MSA kz2 karting.(125 6spd gearbox)

Can answer any questions just fire away. How old is he?

I can give all realistic costs associated with a season in cadet/mini/junior max, senior max or kz2.

My eldest is 16, i had a good chat email with Keiran Smart over the past few days. The long and short being the race season is now up which i understand. But would be interested in buying a kart, the current dilemma is what kart... the sensible one is a junior max that gives eldest and his brother the chance to both drive on the circuit or compete should they feel the need. second son down is fiercely competitive... I could get a senior Kart, which could do lad and or me, but i want him to work his way up.

I am expecting to be about 1500-2000 for a kart, 500-1000 for a years running costs, travel to events, MSA licence if they race.

Its as much about the work that is needed, working on kart, as it is about the racing. Even if we had a kart, prated about with it and drove on track i would be happy, Does that make any sense? Racing is a bonus.

Is there much of a change in price/ standard between junior max and senior max?

If you are speaking with Kieran that's a great start. He will keep you informed. Season over but now is the best time for a used bargain, get practice and go racing in 2016. Lots of clubs are doing non Msa and it's a great way to get a taster as the licence process and buying in cert gear is expensive. Non Msa criteria is "fit for purpose" helmet and race suit boots and gloves, so older stuff acceptable. Entry fee is cheaper too. Engines also don't have to be sealed.

I get the father son bonding, my dad is my mechanic and I love still getting to spend time with him this way.

Senior max and junior max are very similar except senior has a power valve. You can upgrade a junior to senior with a barrel if you really wanted. X30 class is taking off in England so some cheap rotax kit about.

Prices not far off for purchase, running costs will be more than quoted once racing mainly for tyres, but initially you can pick up used ones and if racing to start with you can use a set over two meetings.

Hope you take the plunge and see you at the circuit.

being dead honest not that fussed about racing, or i am not i think just being at the circuit and the social buzz makes it as fun. I know that but want son to see it and apprecaite it.
It is a natural progression of something to do as much as the competition, but eldest son does seem to have a natural affinity to going fast, has helped me work on cars whenever i can or with the limited space we have.
Interesting on the classifications, non MSA competition might be fun also but is it a level playing field?

Thanks dom, is Stu Pollock on SE or at Boyndie?
