Holiday Cottage West Scotland/ Isles Recommendations

Post by Dominic » Mon Oct 19, 2015 11:24 am

We have had some great suggestions for various places for various things from the SE community, so as we are planning our summer holiday next year to take place in Scotland, I thought I would ask if anyone had any suggestions for some accommodation. We are looking for a self catering place, would be nice to get something with a bit of character (old / new / whatever). We don't mind paying a bit extra for something a wee bit unusual, but don't want to pay crazy money either. We are open to suggestions - Mrs S is keen on the Western Isles, but if the place is right, we are fairly flexible on where we go. Would probably do some cycling, but I guess most places have quieter roads for that anyway.

TIA :thumbsup

We stayed in Grantont then Carrbridge last week with both sets of parents and it reaffirmed how nice that area is and how varied the activities are in that part of the world. I usually say west coast whenever anyone asks for somewhere to go but i think i'd go back to that area.

I can't help on recommendations as the lodges were both excellent but too big for your purposes.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Good friend on mine owns a cottage on Skye

Doesn't allow pets though so might not suit if you intended taking the dog.

Thanks! We are undecided if we would take the mutt or not, so "pets allowed" is not essential. :thumbsup

Not a recommendation - but always worth a check by location... http://www.cottages-and-castles.co.uk/

We're in one right now, Dom.

The Old Post Office, Corran, near Glenelg.

Not sure that it's well placed for cycling, but bring an all-terrain buggy and you're sorted :-)

This. Great cycling nearby and great walks. Many hide and seek opportunities.

We've stayed at these places and can highly recommend them:
Islay: http://tirnanogislay.co.uk/
Lewis: http://www.hebrides-selfcatering.co.uk/seacote.html

Both islands have some great roads for cycling (and driving). Islay has the added advantage of a distillery on every street corner (Lewis only has the one, but worth a visit).

Would recommend that you have a look at Alasdair Sawdays: http://www.sawdays.co.uk

We have used them a number of times for B&B in England and also Hotels/Agratourismo's in Europe and have never been disappointed. It's the first "accommodation" portal that we go to.

There is a Self Catering selection (with Pets Welcome selection box):

We stayed a great place on Harris. House was called Seaforth and was in Rhenigidale, had to go to the end of the road and walk the rest for about 30 mins. Total peace and quiet, caught mackerel off the rocks in front of the house and happened to be there same time as Hebridean Celtic Festival so loads of bands playing small venues over Harris and Lewis
