Mate's one has just passed his test and is looking for a cheap (1-1.5k) car. There's bound to be one of you with a car they've been meaning to sell...

I think newer cars are cheaper to insure for young uns....
....daughter turns 17 next week and my plan of buying wife a new Skoda Citigo last year has come to fruition, £370 to have her as a named driver once qualified, honestly expected it to be double that

Needs to be 1.4 or less. I don't think the new car option is really an option in this case (although it is a good idea)

£300 deposit, £105/month, and it's not bread & butter spec, no brainer in my book.
And beloved sproglet runs around in something which offers reasonable safety.

All our friends and family have gone down the parent/ child shared new car route as it's the only way it's affordable and offers best safety solution. The one exception got an old Pug diesel for £350, insurance over £1500 and it's costing a fortune in fuel.
Things like Clios, Twingos, Corsas all available for a sensible monthly HP figure with cheap or free insurance.

I have my sisters VW Bora 1.9TDI 130BHP ST to sell . 2004.
Perfect first car. 134k, and she's spent a fair amount getting it sorted in the last few years.
Been in our family since new, so we know the entire history. Used it to get home last night after getting another flat tyre in the 6 series - still going strong and delivering 45mpg!
Even has a full set of winter tyres on it for the winter - was going to stick it up to see if anyone fancied it anyway.

finding this out, my oldest will be of driving age next year, he is already getting quotes for classics, 205's, mini's, mk1/2 golfs/jettas all of which are hideously expensive. problem is i doubt wife will go to a rollerskate for a daily and i am sure as hell not buying son a new car... not unless he learns how to work...

Pete, spotted a nice enough looking Fiesta for a grand at the used car place in Gatehead on Sunday as I cycled past. Have been V impressed with the focus shed so far, but most of them are 1.6s, expect the fiesta will be powered by something more insurable.

Was chatting to someone recently who was saying all the students at Uni who drive these days have brand new cars - Aygos / C1s / citygo / corsa etc, seems the £89 per month and cheap insurance makes sense to plenty of them.
Certainly I am seeing it with my clients - car ownership seems to be less, and leasing is the favored option. I recently heard a statistic* that 80% of new cars on the road are now through PCP / lease deals.
*I appreciate that 155% of statistics are made up
