65" Monitor

Post by tut » Sat Jul 25, 2015 10:26 am

????????????? WTF, was my initial response, but then read the reviews and when the picture was tweeked they were 5*. However I still thought who would use a 65" monitor, then realised I only use my TV as a monitor as it is purely a display for the Sky box.

My 60" five year old looks like it is on the blink, thick black line down the middle of the screen, so am I correct in thinking that I could replace it with this even though it does not have a built in tuner? The reviews are also mentioning 3D which I do not understand as I thought that had to be controlled by the tuner.

Good idea or not?

A better way to spend £900 than a stupid drone, that's for sure. :)

It's not a stupid drone. It's a helicopter. Mate runs his with goggles on and reckons it's ace. Although I fear what he looks like.

That is what I decided Graeme so going to order one.

Also looked at other Hisense products which I wish I had done earlier. This is amazing value and is better spec than my iPad Mini, quad core cpu, retina screen, sd card, micro USB port, 4K, aluminium case, and all for £99, i.e. the same price as Tesco's tablet.

I love their power consumption figures ... 198Kilowatts per year ... I assume they mean 198kilowatt-hours per year ;-)

Tut, that's an insane screen - worth getting it just to see what it looks like - with your eye sight you probably won't notice any minor quality niggles (which maybe the more discerning home theatre buff might); your Sky box is "only" going to be 1080p so the TV will have to upscale to whatever res it is using ... if you're standing close to the screen you might notice some blurring/strange artifacts ... but at 2m distance you're unlikely to see or care about any of that; ultimately the sky box is the limiting factor in quality, not the display.

If you were trying to drive it with all sorts of fancy content from BluRay and so on then it might struggle more because it appears to have an HDMI1.4 input which I think will limit you to 30fps refresh rate at 4K (whereas your 1080p will be 50 or 60 fps depending on source).

Anyway, for the money it doesn't seem like a huge risk.

Cheers,
Robin

Tut as Robin said the scaler on that thing will probably be iffy at best.
If you've got Sky HD it's going to have to convert your 1080i or 786p signal in to 3840 by by 2160 and i doubt it will do a very good job.
The other thing to bear in mind is that it may not have speakers built in if it's a pure monitor.

Silly question maybe but have you looked into having yours repaired? A friend recently recovered his 60" Panasonic for the sake of a £20 part that cost £120 all in for repair.

Read a mass of reviews Robin especially on AF Forums and have a good idea of the pros and cons. 4K is not really relevant at present and I suspect it will be quite a while before Sky put it out judging by their 3D output. I don't buy BluRay discs but for those that do 4K players are coming out in Sept. Quite a few use it linked up to a PC with HDMI, but as you say it is 1.4 as opposed to 2.0 so will output 4K at 30hz and not 60, though opinion is that if you sit as far back from it as I do that maybe not noticeable. Also the picture on start up is pretty poor, but tweeting the control menu will give an excellent one.

Hisense say they are changing it to HDMI 2.0 and also to H.265 codec, not sure if that entails a hardware or software upgrade and they are also providing a dedicated 4K box, so that should sort out some of the negatives. I don't game but the new boxes have 4K capability and a lot of owners use these, but I will initially be happy with Sky HD and a modern display as mine is quite dim with muted colours compared to Verian's. I also do not have 3D which she has and there is content that I would like to watch. Golf is a whole new ballgame in 3D as you can see the contours of the course, and tennis is very impressive as well and it would be great if they bought it out for F1. I don't watch many films but I have Netflix which outputs in 4K as does utube, but I would like to watch Avatar 3D Blu-ray which we have, and would probably buy the 4K version as well. The wild life programs are also great in 3D, but the take up has been lower than expected which is probably why Sky have taken it off a dedicated channel and dumped it in with films in On Demand which not everybody has access to.

Visually everyone agrees that the set looks superb and comparable to any of the big boys, although Hisense are actually the 4th largest TV manufacturer in the world. At that price it is not too much of a risk as I would have to buy it unseen, but to get the same spec from LG or Samsung would cost £2.5K - £3k.

It does have speakers Tony, twins plus woofer and by all accounts pretty good.

Not going to chance a repair Ferg as I really would like a new set with a better picture, and to put it into perspective Verian's Tesco invoice yesterday was £270 which is quite normal, and it would only cost me a weeks Pension. I don't see the point of us going to the grave with a six figure amount in the Bank, so we need to start spending it on more than pork scratchings.

This was mentioned on the Forum, but I can not find it available at all.

Would this do the trick between the monitor and Sky box and give full 4K?

I am seeing movies becoming available in 4k. Send me a hard drive to fill for you with movies and you could plug it in to view them.

Good point, no way with Sky BB, but hopefully with the 22mb Satellite system.

64GB USB or 500GB external?

I have an e-on energy meter so I can see the kw/hr that I am using, and with no appliances on other than fridge/freezer, the background seems excessive.

My TV is on all day 0900-2300, not so much for TV but I listen to 5 Live and Radio 3 via wireless headphones, so put my hand on the vents at the top and it was hotter than a radiator. Checked the meter with it on and off and it is taking 400W at least which is the same as a bar on a halogen fire.

New monitor should pay for itself in a few years.

I make it approx 8 years at 15p per unit. But as you don't pay for electricity due to windmill it will be forever :-)

Aint got the Turbine yet Robin, but they are coming along to do a survey.

A 13Kw would do nicely but with lots of acreage maybe they will put in a 2Gw and I will have even more problems with how to spend money. :D
