On my way home tonight, I was witness to a nasty accident involving a motorbike and a car.
The car pulled out a side street to cross a main road, but was partially unsighted by a bus stopped at a bus stop. The bike was in the outside lane passing the bus and didn't stand a chance. He hit the car square on and was thrown about 40ft up the road.
First thoughts were he was goner, but thankfully he was still conscious (his right hand was hanging at a peculiar angle though).
I was straight on the phone to the ambulance whilst an off duty nurse looked after the biker. Ambulance arrived within 5mins, but the police didn't pitch up until an hour after the accident leaving an off duty policeman and me to try to direct the traffic.
I don't think either party were completely blameless. The car shouldn't have pulled out and the bike was probably going a bit fast for the road conditions (I don't think he was speeding, but must have been close to the limit - 40mph passing a bus at on a busy stretch of road).
Just glad there were no more serious injuries.
Whether you're on a bike or in a car, be safe.
