Out of interest, does anyone know what lap times the F1 cars were doing there before F1 stopped using it on safety grounds? I guess that the faster times now are quicker...
The ring is undoubtedly an epic stretch of tarmac, but it not what you could all a safe track - I suppose that's part of the appeal though.
I think that lap times are of greater relevance that 0-60 / 0-100 or top speed stats. They are better to illustrate what a car is capable of. It appears that the 'Ring has become the benchmark track of choice for that purpose.

buried in this article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_N ... s_(racing)
is this "1976 08 01 7:10,8 190,8 Tyrrell P34-Ford F1 Jody Scheckter 1976 German Grand Prix, fastest lap [39]"
and this "According to F1 Racing magazine of June 2006, BMW engineers had estimated that a BMW-Sauber F1.06 could lap in under 5:15.8[59] which equals to an average of 237 km/h (147 mph)."

Incidentally they did go faster in 75:
"1975 08 02 6:58,6 196,4 Ferrari 312T F1 Niki Lauda 1975 German Grand Prix, pole-position [33][34]"
guess regs slowed them or track changes...

Id love to see a "flying" pole lap, would need super concentration on such a circuit. Would really highlight the car performance differences and also the men from the boys. Not sure it would make a good race though?

And for a proper racing car - Steffan Bellof did it in 1983 in 6:11 in the mighty Porsche 956. Think that's still the overall lap record?
Not totally comparable with the F1 times though, as by that stage they'd removed the southern loop, which is where the modern GP track is. But very comparable with the tourist layout as it is today - albeit all the tourist times are done bridge to gantry, so totally missing the long straight.
