Killer accessory - Campaganza regulars take note

Post by campbell » Thu May 21, 2015 10:40 am

For those who've admired my ageing but ingeniously designed folding BBQ, Aldi are selling a "Special Buy" version of something very similar indeed. For today only!

Image

https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/t ... -barbecue/

Pros:

- very similar to ours (which was bought in Spain in 1994!)
- folds down very compact, about 15cm x 30cm x 2cm
- even better design than mine, as it integrates a coal tray to allow better airflow
- c/w own natty carry bag ;-)

Cons:

- heavier
- doesn't fold quite as flat (my original folds to less than 1cm thick...although it will still slide behind an S1 seat!)
- hopper is made of beautiful looking polished stainless steel which will scratch like f*ck after 1st use

It has an extra feature compared to mine, a folding stand, which raises it up a little. OTOH, if you remove this from the carry bag, it folds nearly as flat as mine too.

£12.99. Bit more than the 300 Pesetas I paid for mine, but that's inflation for you.

I spotted that on the Aldi offers list and immediately thought of Campbell. Lidl had something very similar a week ago, but I rejected that as too big for the exige, the Aldi one looks more compact. I reckon you could drill some additional holes in the panels to add lightness.

Ohh, I like that.

Might pick one up for my collection of camping gear that doesn't get used at the mo, but when my baby is a bit bigger... :)
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
'18 Mazda Mx5 - The wife's, so naturally my daily
'19 Ducati Monster 797 - Baby bike bike

As many may know, I've been on the lookout for a replacement for our foldy barby for years. I stupidly left it out overnight at home one time and rust set in very fast. So the base now has extra bonus "air holes" or "added lightness" (!) which threaten to undermine the entire structure :-(

Aldi are very timely :-)

Campbell, I bought this last year whilst in Cotswold looking for Christmas presents and spotted it for sale, when it reminded me watching you cooking down on the beach, over on the West Coast last year.

That looks good. I fully expect though that on every use you will tell the tale of the original with a tear in your eye. :-)

Ferg - you know me too well!

Steve - that looks very similar indeed. And only twice the price ;-). Have you had some success with it?

I'm considering a fish grill clamp thing to widen my repertoire from Fajitas, LOL.
