Building an extension - trade & window recommendations?

Post by Jam_s160 » Sun Apr 26, 2015 4:28 pm

Hi all,

A bit of a call for help and recommendations...

We are building a living room extension to our 1880 croft house and all go from May. Plans and building warrant all in place etc. I have a great stone mason, digger chap and electrician whom I've used before when we did our stealing conversion, but all the other trades people I've still yet to get on board. Also I need some large aspect windows and one mock sash window made (wood not pvc).

We are based 20miles north of Aberdeen and I'm wondering if folks on here can make any good recommendations for the following:

Joiner - build all timber frame work structure and roof
Plumber - to well plumb in 2 radiators into our existing system
Slater - to well slate / do lead work and top

Wood windows - supplier who can get close to or replicate our current mock sash windows
Granite stone plinths - we need some older style granite plinths to work around the windows sills and the gable end

Structural engineer - to make a calculation on a section of wall we want to remove to open out a fire place to be double sided etc.

For those who have experience or can recommend please do, as I would like to complete the build by the end of this year. Our foundations are starting mid May so looking for people to be available from June :cheers

Thanks in advance

James

Hi, I got hardwood sash and case windows from blairs recently, the joiners were impressed, and they were half the price of stuff from the local manufacturers. They are based in Greenock, if you are in Aberdeen you are welcome to come for a look 8)

Joiners, I used Stephen Connor for all my windows and extension, would reccomend him.

Cheers

I've worked for both these companies and I highly recommend them for your windows.

Aboyne Joinery Company AJC made an excellent job of various hardwood windows and a folding door system. One was a gable end frame which may be along the lines of your feature window. Quality was excellent and I thought the price was very good.

Granite I used to get from fowlies demolition, they have a yard in aberdeen. I have a few corner stones, random wall blocks and a couple of big slabs which could be cut for sills or lintels, your welcome to any bits you can use foc, located near kemnay

Wooden windows are manufactured by Rae joiners, auchnagatt, they have state of the art CNC machinery and supply bespoke windows nationwide.
Davie Ironside main street new deer and Alan Stuart, Udny, both excellent builders.
Willie Martin, new deer, skilled slater and stone mason
Simpson muirtack Ellon, Stephen urquhart Ellon, decent honest joiners
All these guys have worked in your area for years and will happily give you references and examples of work done.

For the granite, I'm sure Aberdeenshire council have a reclaimed stone yard at the industrial estate in mintlaw

There is a council yard in Mintlaw with Granite, if you are just after a few bits worth a visit. I contacted them a couple of years ago and their price was about double the rate I got in Aberdeen, so depends on transport time etc. My granite heap has been stored in a farmers field for the past 2 years as I gradually used it up for various projects, coincidentally he called my today to ask if a relative could use some. So I suspect the more useful bits will disappear, but you never know. If you are interested let me know and I'll follow up with the farmer and see what may be left.

One lesson I have learned is that not all granite is the same, if you are up in the New Deer area, it is a courser granite than Rubislaw or Kemnay Granite, so if you are matching stone best to look locally and take a sample for grain and colour.
