Camera Apps

Post by Danny T30TUS » Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:53 pm

Hey Folks,

Just got the new HTC One M9 and have been playing around with the 20 mega pixel camera. Generally I am happy with the quality of the the pictures but was wondering if anyone had ever tried using any of the digital SLR apps that are available.

I owned a DSLR a few years ago but it got stolen and I've never replaced it. Other than buying another camera has anyone got any experience using any of the apps that are available?

I guess my main aim is to be able to take some good quality shots with the phone and try out a few different things. By no means am I a camera expert, but I do like the idea of being able to play with settings such as ISO and shutter speeds.

All suggestions and advice welcome.

Cheers

Danny

I have no clue about expensive cameras, but my guess is that the optics of even a rubbish (D)SLR will outperform the best smartphone camera by a substantial margin and an app on the telephone won't be able to recover that.

I accept there have been big advances in miniature lens design, but even so a 'phone will likely have a rolling shutter vs a mechanical shutter (or electronic equivalent) found in a stills camera and the glass lens is about 10 times the size.

I guess my point is that you can take the images from a 'phone camera and post process them, but that won't make them the same as actual SLR ... but then maybe you don't care.

Cheers,
Robin

Fair points, Robin, but seeking a little more exposure control over even a mediocre optic camera will do no harm. These things do a lot of "intelligent" guesswork which often achieves a good snap, but thwarts the effect you may actually be seeking.

I learned the ropes on a manual focus Praktica...that grounding served me well :-)

Come to think of it, picking up the cheapest digital (true) SLR one can will still provide a great grounding. Shutter speeds and aperture settings are still the fundamental principles, right enough :-)

ETA - an iPhone camera can produce pretty sharp results under many circumstances. So unless you need optical zooming or handling of difficult / low light conditions, one may be surprised at the results which are possible with a phone. It's all about the composition, at the end of the day...

I use two programs for editing pictures depending what I want to do with the image first would be Faststone Image Viewer which is fee to download

The second is Adobe Lightroom but you have to pay for this but the results are the best you can get, you can get a trial version of it.

For mobile photography I use the camera's own software set to manual (Sony Xperia z1) then post process using a combination of vsco cam, Photoshop express for mobile and histogram although not the preset filters. I've also done some black and white conversions of canon 5d mk3 jpegs after raw conversion in Lightroom, export to phone and tinkered with in Photoshop express for mobile which is quite a handy wee tool.
