Lotusless

Post by renmure » Mon Mar 16, 2015 5:58 pm

Well, MMC having just sold our Type 72 Exige, Wendy and I find ourselves without a Lotus for the 1st time in ages. :(

Firstly, huge and genuine thanks to Brandon and MMC for selling the car on my behalf. I don't imagine it is a perfect solution for everyone or every car and I know from other car forums that SOR / Commission sales can be a nervous minefield of mistrust and worry but MMC have been totally professional and an absolute dream.

After an S3 Turbo Esprit, a V8 Esprit, a GT3 Esprit, an S2 K-series Elise, a 111R Elise, an S1 Exige a couple of Lotus 7-esq cars and now an S2 Exige I am a bit stuck as to where to go next as far as Lotuses. The Evora holds no appeal unfortunately, nor does the V6 Roadster and I think I need the looks of the V6 Exige S to grow on me a bit more (or they need to add more vents and scoops and wings..... I like them!!). The S1 Exige was special but really, the Ultima is like a grown-up S1 Exige and having enjoyed my wee cheap (comfortable) MX5 for the past couple of years I don't know if I could go back into the compromises of an earlier Elise too readily.

Anyhow, I guess there are worse dilemmas to have. In the meantime, I am off to look at the Turbo Esprits on Pistonheads Classifieds.... just out of interest of course. 8)

That is an impressive list of cars Jim. Sometimes wonder if I am just too sensible :D The Type 72 is a super car IMO, just was not the right time for me unfortunately , kind of sad to see it go from MMC. Im on the same page as you regarding the Evora. For me it just doesn't look crazy enough (no disrespect to owners intended). Exige V6 has grown on me although out of reach at the mo.

I don't think so, although it is more in keeping with the boy racer / street racer look I like. Funnily enough I saw the new orange Elise Cup car that Brandon has as a demo and really like the look of that but not enough to want to buy one yet. I also like the Elise = Roof Off type of thinking. I am sure something will just pop up and fit the bill when I am not looking. :)

ouch!!! :blackeye

I enjoyed the idea of the Caterham R300 and the bike engined Westfield more than I actually enjoyed having the cars, so I think the 2-11 might need a few more cans of man up :D

In saying that, the Porsche Turbo S was fast and comfortable but bored me so you would imagine there must still be a lot of performance cars somewhere between those :thumbsup

Just in case not obvious I suspect you can take the hard top off the elise cup and replace with a standard soft top without too much effort - probably just requires a few parts ordered.

It might even have the grommets seeing that it's an Elise...so only a soft top to buy.
(should be able to see them rear of the roof upon a nosey inside)

If not the grommets are pennies and a quick install (steady hand w/ dremmel!).

The silver cup in Murrays is stunning. Might as well book a test drive at least ;)

Jim,

Know you were looking at a Lotus but would the new Porsche Boxster Spyder (981 variant) which is coming out tick any of your boxes? A little bit like a Lotus in concept with a little bit more practical day to day living (i.e. bigger boot). Know that some OPC's are taking deposits (although nothing is guaranteed the way Porsche handle any car with limited numbers). No specific details yet from Porsche of what it will look like and what the roof will be but suggestions that a slightly detuned version of the GT4 engine.

I know the desire to return to a Lotus does get to you - often look at the classifieds myself ;)

The new not one I can think of that's not on the list is the Lotus Carlton... If you can find one.

I dunno if a Lotus Carlton these days would be a case of "never meet your heroes"...

It'll still be bloody fast, but it'll also be an early 90s Vauxhall inside and they were nasty as, when new...

I looked in depth to buying one about ten yrs ago (bought my RS6 instead) and even back then, model-specific parts were getting scarce...mint ones were easily gettable for mid-20s, and I looked at a rough leggy LHD Omega at Anniesland Trade Centre in Glasgow for circa £13k
