Load of pussies. Luke was stuck offshore as well.

Been struck several times over 30 years, mostly in the North Sea, but we never had forecasts of it so it did not come into the equation. However sometimes it does not pass through the aircraft but we do not know why. Unfortunately I did have one nasty when it took my tail rotor off, but still managed to put it down on the sea with the floatation employed. Earned me a nice little visit to the States to accept an award.

looks like the met office are offering a prediction service since 2012 as well, looks like a theory whereby the aircraft generates a charge during flight and passing through an opposite charged cloud the aircraft will discharge the cloud... or thats my understanding.

Are you stuck out just now? Happy New Year by the way... hopefully see you on the trails soon :)

Tut is your flying like your driving? i have a mate who is a pilot and his driving is terrifying, i think its the lack of a third dimension...

Def up for the Audax 100, must put a post up here as well actually. Graeme Obree is speaking in Huntly in February. Hugely influential under rated cycling legend.
Have you noticed the Enduro Series is coming up here too :) Are you int he old fart class as well now ;)

It really is no big deal as long as the pilot has the experience and handles the emergency correctly and does not panic. Helps if the sea is calm and it is not the middle of Winter and at night, but what are the odds of that combination?

Not a helicopter but a few years ago a plane was hit by lightning and a ball of lightning traveled down the centre aisle of the cabin. The cabin crew in the rear galley stepped out of the way and it exited leaving a small melt mark.

Unfortunately we only get a triggered lightning forecast once every hour, that's why if it's bordered line, the pilots tend to wait until the next forecast. Remember it all about the key word, SAFETY! The forecast still doesn't stop you getting hit, Bond had a 225 struck just after Xmas and I also heard a Norwegian S92 got struck this week, so they still happen.

If you had seen the pictures of the damaged caused by a lightning strike on one of CHCs S92 the other year your would be happy we keep them on the ground if there's any risk. The aircraft ended up getting sent to Norway for major structural repairs.

I've seen a super puma main rotor blade after a lightning strike, it looked like something out of a cartoon, when someone sticks their finger in the barrel of a gun and the trigger has been pulled. That was the pilots 3rd lightning strike in his flying career in helicopters, he gave up after that one.
