To be honest, Chris Harris doesn't really interest me - whenever I've watched the odd video linked from here I've not found his journalism to be engaging - of course it's horses for courses and there is no denying he reviews some great cars, so I can see the interest is there.

I don't understand the finer details of what he's writing about in that article as I've never been a consumer of automotive journalism and clearly there is some youtube/drive (whatever that is)/jalopnik(ditto) politics I don't get.

If the premise is "it's hard to make money out of being a freelance automotive journalist" then my response would probably be "do something else"

Why is it that people like stampycat can make a good living on YouTube and he can't? I assumed it all came through the advertising which is the same as print surely? And without actually having to print mags or dvd's.

Chris Harris' main problem is a simple one.

I cannot stand the man, not sure why, possibly a mix of his attitude, delivery, mannerisms and an overwhelming auora of trying way too hard to be liked.

I have tried to watch his videos, I really have, but I just can't. I always end up either turning it off, muting it or scanning through to the outside shots of the cars.

I think that's easy. People like stampycat appeal to youfs who suck up videos of people playing video games for some reason.
They don't watch bitter cart journos who aren't aged 9 like Clarkson. Adults, who Harris is trying to aim for, tend to watch TV, possibly via some subscription like Sky, our cable, not YouTube videos..

Hang on a minute though. I'm continually being told that the older generation is higher in number than the kids so how does that work.

In the last few years Harris has owned a Gallardo, a GT3 RS 4.0, a Ferrari FF, a Testarossa, Audi S4, and M5 among many other cars. Either he has another source of income, or freelance motoring journalism doesn't pay so badly after all...
