End to road rage?

Post by mwmackenzie » Sat Dec 06, 2014 2:57 pm

Surely if all cars were fiited with a camera like so... http://www.snooper.co.uk/drive-vehicle- ... r-3hd.html , everyone would know their actions were being recorded and maybe folk might be less aggressive on the roads??

I had an incident the other day with a FUD in a black E46 M3 on the M90. The fanny was speeding down the inside lane on the run up to the bridge, there was traffic in his lane ahead and he swerved in front of me and had to slam on his brakes to avoid ramming the car that was slowing infront of me almost causing me to crash into him. I flashed my lights and pulled back as the guy was obviously a fud in a rush! After leaving the bridge the road widens to 3 lanes again so i started to overtake him as he showed no sign of overtaking the car infront of him, again he pulls out without indicating when I was almost along side him must have been a few cm off taking the front off my car... I was admittadly getting angry with him but he sped off so I let him go and merrily went about my journey jigging to some x-mas tunes thinking what a fanny he was. Any way again he's caught in traffic as we hit the M9, I pull out onto the M9 he is in the inside lane in traffic heading to the A8. I was changing lanes onto the M9 so looking over my right shoulder changing lanes, then glanced to my left where he was and he was driving along with his middle finger against his window to all he'd pissed off on his journey ( that was a few by the way as he tail gated everyone he came accross! All that got him no further than the rest of the traffic but had put several people in danger... I smiled and went my merry way thinking I wish I had caught that fanny on camera driving in such an erractic dangerous fashion!

So surely if all commuter hacks were fitted from the factory with a camera folk might thing twice before driving dangerously in traffic?

It's a very small step from cameras in all car to telemetics in all cars. That would be the end of any spirited driving full stop as big brother can and undoubtedly would watch ever step you make. There is already to much intrusion on daily life with CCTV and the like. They are just another form of control which is probably inevitable anyway with the way that modern life is heading.

I for one am firmly against anything like this becoming mandatory despite the perceived benefits. That and I doubt it would stop that kind of behavior, what exactly would you do if you had filmed?

Mike, I don't know, I'd most likely have done nothing, that wasn't my point, my point was if it was standard and could be used as evidence then these TITS could be prosecuted for endangering lives of innocent folk trying to get home at rush hour! :thumbsup I know we get monitored in everything we do every day as it is, but it would be impossible for them to monitor everyone at once, it would be up to the driver to submit the evidence and complaint.

Im firmly with Mike on this - a step too far and worryingly it is heading that way already
How long until the telematics(?) that insurers use reaches the stage where you won't be able to get a quote without it, pretty much there already for many teen drivers. Once we reach that point we may as well all give up and move to driverless cars. :|

With telemetics they don't have top monitor you, the telemetics does that and sends a signal and data if, for arguments sake, some limit is exceeded. Hire firms use it to monitor driving standards and investigate crashes involving their vehicles. I was astonished at the amount of information they get from these things, even highlighted when you brake harder than the norm and there is a train of thought that says they should be fitted to all cars. You can see the start of it now with reductions in premium if you agree to have one fitted.
Cameras are the start, what follows is much worse. We will all be consigned to driving like joe average, who lets face it is a sh!t driver and goes everywhere at 40mph who sees driving purley as a mode of transport to be endured not enjoyed. Have seen similar in industry, start as an idea and once that idea gains some traction next thing we know black box recorders are being installed. Same then, same now!

Sorry to jump all over you Mark, I am not having a go at you personally but the above is exactly the train of thought that has gotten us where we are today. Thing is now the technology exists to actually address the perceived problem. Is this guy better or worse than the person that brakes every time a car comes the other way at night or drives everywhere at 40mph blissfully unaware of the tailback behind them and the impatiens building within said cue. If you start with the above where does it end?. At some point or other we have ALL made questionable decisions will driving that could under different circumstances been construed as dangerous. Should we ALL be prosecuted? who decides who should and who shouldn't.

I just want to watch the view from it as I get bored if it is not one of our road runs.

No stress Mike as I can see it from both side, I'm not that blinkered  I just saw this camra on an E-mail from autocar and thought about how folk back off when a cyclist has a helemt cam on and lets them know they're being recorded, figured it might provoke the same behavious from a motorist pointof view was all. i'm by no means perfect whith my road manners 100% of the time and have done my fair share of 'enjoyable' driving when I had a Lotus, guess I'm just slowly sliding into a commuter driver as I don't have the money at the moment to fund a toy at the moment :(
