An English friend is looking to take his good lady to Edinburgh for three nights, with a view to popping the question.

He asked me for nice, special hotel recommendations....max £600 for the three nights...preferably central.

I suggested Balmoral, he can get that for £457, any other suggestions appreciated...

TIA :thumbsup

Has the Witchery still got a good reputation?

Steve.

The big ones are the Balmoral at the east end of Princes st and the Caledonian (now called Waldorf Caledonian Edinburgh or something) at the west end. I wouldn't pick the Sheraton either. Big concrete block and not very memorable.
But lots of nice, smaller, boutique hotels too if that's more intimate. Couple to check out are The Bonham and also The Howard. :thumbsup

I did some work for the owner of the Witchery recently and he showed me a couple of the rooms above the restaurant - they were very grand/fancy - think big roll top copper baths and 4 poster beds etc

I think would be ideal for a romantic break

I enjoyed the GlassHouse last weekend, 4* I believe.
£156 a night when i booked months ago.
Complementary mini bar in the room and communal garden terrace.
£42 bucks for breakfast room service but was worth it .... never visited the restaurant.... read into that what you will :D
Was very quiet , hardly saw anyone. Nice modern hotel.
Was perfect for the Playhouse , Cinema , John Lewis and restaurants at the top of Leith.
Going back in April , approx £176 per night.
5 min walk from the station too.

Stayed at the Balmoral for a weekend a few years back but not worth the money , its a tourist trap IMO.

Stayed at the Radisson on the Royal mile a few times too but was 6-7 years ago. Was nice at the time. Seem to remember parking was a bitch.

Another for Prestonfield

Same owner as Witchery (James Thomson)

Does attract a certain type of clientele though..... :D

I have stayed at the Chester Residence on Chester Street and it a townhouse split into serviced apartments

They have another townhouse on Rothesay Place round the corner and i think that might be a hotel as there is a bar and reception area etc

It will be nice and more intimate than one of the big hotels
