111S Elise

I have had my S1 Elise for eight years, and thinking about changing for a S2. There is nothing wrong with my car at all, but I just fancy a change. I am looking at an 111S, as I have been told it’s a desirable model to have. I do know the difference in the engine, and gearbox etc. I have also been told it’s a smoother car to drive.

The question I would like to ask is?

1, Is the S2 111S worth buying, compared to my S1?
2, Is the 111S that much better in the fun factor than my S1?
3, Is the 111S worth paying the extra money on top of the S1
4, Or should I just keep the S1, and save my money?

Your thoughts much appreciated.

Stew

I don't think there will be that much difference once you get used to the slight power increase and an S1 is probably more desirable/ valuable in the long run. A 111R would be a more noticeable change if that's within your budget?

Edit to add: each new version of the Elise is slightly softer but better screwed together and more reliable than its predecessor but an unknown car may still have hidden repairs or expense that will make you regret it.

If you want to keep the Elise then the S1 you've got is great.

Differences you'll notice - smoother power delivery over the complete rev range, less oversteer (be that good or be that bad), possibly less rattly, possibly less leaky, possibly worse fuel economy on motorway runs).

Differences you won't notice - wheel bearings won't need changed every other week, better electrics.

If your S1 hasn't been unreliable I would suggest you should stay with what you have.

Cheers,
Robin

If you like the S2 and you want to change then a my04 year 111s is the best of the bunch IMHO.

2, Is the 111S that much better in the fun factor than my S1?
I've had both and truth be told I enjoy the S1 more. It just feels more exciting to me to drive. However, that might just be down to the nature of use as the S1 is only a weekend car, and even then it's only every other weekend if I'm lucky, whereas I used the 111s a lot more.

It depends and what you are going to use it for. It's a much better everyday car and much better on motorways.

Good S1's are tough to find but if you want a change and don't you might regret it. Flip side is the wait for a good S1 could take a while if you decide to go back :)

Many thanks for the replies. I don't really use the Elise that often, and it sits in the garage for a sunny day. I think I'm going to stick with what I have.

Cheers

The thinking man's choice, Stew :-)

Just be sure to dig it out from time to time...

Sounds sensible Stew. I think I'd be tempted to keep the s1 anyway tbh.
Could modify the engine for more poke, change suspension and brakes and have a new car anyway ?
