BT email accounts going offline :(

Post by David » Thu Oct 02, 2014 11:50 am

Anyone with a BT account having problems recently? Since they migrated my email account it has been very slow and intermittent, but now it is saying the 'account is unavailable' really pissed off by this as I use my email a lot, and for some important work stuff.

I've got a BT email address, but never use it for anything. I've just checked and it is saying unavailable.

When did your email account(s) migrate, David?

After being told BTYahoo mail accounts would migrate last spring, I'm still waiting... All our email accounts are still Yahoo, and getting bored of 'account security compromised, reset your password' notifications  (though this does mean its working for me today!)

Last week - we were given 12 days to do it or loose the account so I did it - been pretty awful since. Also terms and conditions changed to delete accounts if not accessed in 150 days. Not impressed as some of my accounts are for archive purposes :(. I can't operated without email so will need to set up an account elsewhere - and may not be going back.

Provided you don't mind world+dog reading your email you can use gmail to read your BT email via the POP3 interface (assuming it has one); this will allow you to migrate off BT and also will auto-login to your account on an hourly basis to avoid the 150 day time out.

Cheers,
Robin

If you're forced to set up a new email address, do it on your own domain name. Then you'll never have to change again, and can move hosting to where ever you like.

No point tying yourself to yet another gmail/yahoo/btinternet or whatever address. Get one you can control.

Agreed. Although hotmail has served me well for around 15 years now. Their IMAP server's a bit slow but I can live with that.

My 2 domains are registered and hosted by Escrivo. Just a few pounds a month and you get to speak to a real person in Scotland when you need help :-)

Thankfully got rid of BT recently once my £26/month for just BB account had run out. Fully with Sky now with free BB for 24 months plus the new Sports Channel, £4.90 for 24 hour phone calls as opposed to £7.50, and free caller display and 1571 which the robbing barsteward started charging £3.50 for.

Why does anybody stay with them, or even sign up in the first place?

Thankfully a friend from Tut Towers 2001 set up "tut@n1tut.com" when I did not really know my way around, so that has been a godsend with never having to change it for myself or Verian. I don't know if Stu paid for it or was just in the business, but it has just kept going.

My view is that, yes, I can have my own domain, but what a PITA - I need to pay for service/server/whatever and keep it all working (witness this months chaos caused by one domain name registration company being acquired by another) - sure it's easy to do, but it's easy to drop the ball too - and when it doesn't work, your emails are being bounced/sent to your backup MX or just being dropped.

So my guess is google is going to be around for 20 years and offer a free email service. Thus people with no technical reason to own a domain are probably as well not bothering. Just sayin' ...

Cheers,
Robin

Well, the email is back up and running this morning. A lot of the functionality that should have been there on day one now seems to be working too. Looks like it was a migration plan that didn't go to plan :?
