Looking to buy a new camera.
Anyone suggest a decent one without going overboard with cost.

just got me a 400D yesterday from jessops, surprisingly cheaper than many of the internet places. Got the 70 - 300mm Tamron lens for £99, which seems good to me and a fair bit knocked off various other accessories like a 2 gig card, decent bag etc..

The longer lens has a decent macro function, lots of fun for a beginner like myself.

Cheers Scotty,
I will keep that in mind.
I take it the 400D is a newer version of the 350D?

G, if you want to spend less, get a 300D or a 350D. You'll probably never need the extra resolution that the 400D provides and if you've never had an SLR before, you'll never notice the difference in features either.

Remember though, having an SLR is very different from carrying a point and shoot camera. You have to have a couple of lenses and filters and carry it all about in a bag so they're not the most practical things to have. You might be better with a 'prosumer' camera that gives you more control but can still be used in a point and shoot fashion.

e.g.

(first hit on google for 'prosumer')

We got a Cannon SureShot Pro 1 a wee while ago & although
not SLR but good lens and can use screen realtime unlike SLR.

Bit more compact than an SLR, fast enough to catch a todler (worth buying a jessops high speed card tho) and a good bit cheaper to boot.

We like it but to be honest we don't need the resolution that 8mp gives you.

If we were buying again we'd get a compact...there are some very good ones just out at the top end that are as good as ours but a lot more handy to cart about.

But hey if you're set on an SLR & want to muck about with lenses/filters etc then the above won't apply at all :)
