Sad news for classic Lotus driver

A driver has died after his car clipped another and rolled over at low speed, during a classic car race at Silverstone racetrack.

Denis Welch, 69, from Staffordshire, was driving a 1960 Lotus, in a race for pre-1966 Grand Prix cars at the Northamptonshire circuit on Sunday
:(

I suppose it demonstrates how far safety has come.

That's awful.

One of my colleagues lost his son earlier this year, also racing classics.

Very very sad.

This is the ugly side of motorsport unfortunately.

I was taking part in the Classic F3 race at Silverstone and had a great weekend. An F3 car rolled during our first race on Saturday but the driver got out okay, car was badly damaged but at least you can fix that.

A real shame to have this happen in what was the best race meeting I have ever taken part in.

I qualified 24th out of 43 and finished 21st in both races.

Given that I haven't been in the car for 2 years, and even then it was 10 laps of Mallory, I came away quite chuffed. Also, first race at Silverstone.

I could write a book about the tales of woe over the weekend with the car but I had great fun and was getting faster and faster as the weekend went on. These old F3 cars carry incredible corner speed and even with the 1976 'aero' package the fast corners are amazing.

I really need to shift some (all) of my success ballast tho' :D
