Register a car in Germany.

There is an advert in this month's Evo (the one with Andy G on the front cover) for a company which will register a car in Germany for you that you can drive all over the EU.
Any ideas why someone would want this?

Tax reasons?
Also, John Hermann (American author of Motorcycling Through the Alps) mentions something about companies who will do something similar, to allow a US national to 'own', rather than rent a vehicle in Europe...?

Guy at work had a German car for cheap insurance (he was German)... I suppose it might be that. Speeding avoidance?

I do live and work between uk and italy, which makes my car life difficult. I'm a uk resident, so i cannot register/insure a car in italy, and my uk insurance won't be valid for use over 180 days abroad (90 for the elise).
Whereas German insurance do not have this limitation. It would make my life easier and i would have to drive a lesser distance for MOT (or whatever is called) for the car i live in italy!
So it's not just "avoidance" be it law/speed/tax there might be advantages!
So...is the Evo you mentioned the one on sale now? I'm back in the uk next week, hopefully still there! Thanks

If you are UK expat (for tax) then it is difficult to get uk car insurance. Quite common for oil industry types on 4/4 rotation to holiday on the off time to maintain less than 90 days in uk...

Specifically to me (and sorry, wasn't my 3d to start with) i do have my own business in the uk, which is where i live. I'm in italy a week-ish per month as i have business ties there, which makes a good thing having a car there ready for when i get there. So, i'm ok for uk law and insurance. I'd just love the idea to leave an elise there and still be insured

Presumably lets you drive the tourist days at the Nurburgring too while retaining valid insurance. As i understand it UK is only country in Europe to make the Ring a specific exclusion... Expensive way to do it though, I'd guess
