New car checklist

Post by craigieb » Wed Sep 27, 2006 5:32 pm

Hi,

As a result of reading other bods' experiences I've concluded:

Lotus build quality + MMC = "snagging list" of niggles to sort out after I've had the car a wee while, and I'm cool with that.

That aside, I'm trying to draw up a list of all the questions I should ask and stuff I should check out before I leave MMC on Friday. Some are bleeding obvious and some may be plain dumb, but this is the first new car I've ever bought so all suggestions welcome :)

List as follows (in no particular order):

  1. Recommended run-in period/limits
  2. Certificate for Alarm/Immobiliser (I've been lead to believe some insurance companies may ask for this) :?:
  3. Contact details for Warranty/Servicing work
  4. Hardtop/Softop Removal/Fitting instructions
  5. Spare Keys
  6. Code/Instructions for stereo
  7. Tyre Foam
  8. Locking Wheel nut thingy
  9. General bodywork/window/wheel check
  10. MMC pre-delivery inspection documentation
  11. Road Tax
...anything else?

Cheers
Craig

New car on Friday eh? You must be one of the first to get a Yota Elise S in Scotland. If you are anything like as excited as I was getting a new Lotus you will be bouncing off the walls by now :D

I reckon Lotus build quality is actually pretty good these days. I have had absolutely no problems at all with my Exige, except for a leaking damper which was replaced under warranty at the first service. The only thing I would suggest is have a very detailed look over the paintwork before you leave the garage and ensure any defects have been noted - Elises have been known to arrive with poor paintwork or to sustain the odd scratch in transit or at the dealer.

Enjoy the car!

Mark

1. check the wheels for kerbing
2. check paintwork (as suggested above)
3. check you've got all bits for the roof ( they forgot to give me my roll- over hoop, but you'll not need one of those on an S2, but you will need the cross-bar thingymys)
4. check they've got reg number right on all documentation
5. check for towing-eye
6. check electric windows [eeeugh] if fitted. If not, check the windows wind all the way up & down (mine fell out of position on the test-drive!)

What I would say, is take your bro or someone less excited than you to help check it over - your mind will subconsciously glaze over minor imperfections!

Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh!

You've pretty much covered it, but a few of additions:

- Manual (for correct model!) and service book pack;
- Toolkit should have locking wheel nut thingamies, towing eye and allen key;
- Check all buttons, etc. inside work (lock button, trip button, power supply if you can);
- Check all lights work;
- As well as checking all paintwork and wheels, stick your head underneath and check undertray and especially underside of front clam either side of number plate for pavement scuffs;
- Radio (stick in a CD if you can to check it plays);
- Ask for a quick drive round the block, witnessed by salesman, to check for unusual rattles/squeaks.

Most of all . . . have a great weekend and enjoy driving your new toy! 8)
