New West Lothian Speed Cameras Go Live

September 25, 2006 13:19

Three new mobile speed camera sites in West Lothian will go live from this week (25/09/06).

The three new sites in Armadale, Livingston and Longridge will have either the mobile safety camera van or the motorbike visit on a regular basis to ensure drivers stick to the speed limit. All of the new mobile speed camera sites are located in residential areas where the speed limit is 30 mph.

Sites only become eligible for a speed camera if there is a history of crashes and speeding. In Armadale, from 2002 to 2004, there had been two crashes resulting in people being killed or seriously injured and seven crashes resulting in people receiving injuries.

Safety Camera Partnership Manager, Colin McNeil said:

"It is unacceptable that people still continue to drive well above the speed limit. In a residential area where there are so many potential hazards 30 mph really is the maximum. At 35 mph a driver is twice as likely to kill a pedestrian as they are at 30 mph. It is the aim of the Partnership to reduce crashes so I hope that the presence of the mobile camera at the three new sites will act as deterrent and slow drivers down.

The deployment of the mobile speed camera is advertised weekly in the local press and can be found on the Partnership’s website; http://www.lbsafetycameras.co.uk

Saw a bike one this morning in Frogston Road...this is really taking the proverbial as the guy is nearly invisible from the front (biker leathers) with the bike hidden very close to the kerb.

Its official, speed is NOT the major factor in most accidents (as if we needed to be told)

Its not speed that kills, it's the stopping suddenly that does it :!:
